Edinburgh have boosted their playing squad by signing Argentinian utility back Lucio Lopez Fleming. He joins the capital side on a three-month trial, subject to international clearance.

The 26 year-old has been capped four times for Argentina, scoring two tries in his debut in April 2004 against Uruguay, and has also appeared on a further four occasions for the national side. He has represented his country in 24 Sevens tournaments between 2002 and 2005, when he played at scrum half. It was on the IRB World Series that Edinburgh's backs coach Rob Moffat first noticed him.

He said: "I have seen him play sevens for Argentina and he is a quality player. In some respects, he is your typical South American; he's naturally aggressive although he's small. He is a back three player but he could almost play any position from nine to 15 for us. He's like a buzz-bomb, an all-action player who is always involved in the game.

"We see him as an excellent addition to our squad as he is a good cover and back up for a number of positions. Having seen him play and knowing his mentality, he will not settle for just being a squad player and he will push established regular starters for Edinburgh.

"I hope he is going to be an addition to our squad at the end of the three month trial period. His fellow countryman Francisco Leonelli was a popular, respected and valued member of the Edinburgh squad last year and I'm sure Lucio will follow in his footsteps."

Graeme Stirling, Edinburgh Rugby's Managing Director, added: "As a back three player, Lucio is a valuable addition to our squad in an area which we identified as needing strengthened. He is fit having just completed his domestic season with San Isidro and, given the huge number of players who are unavailable to Edinburgh due to international commitments, he will get an early opportunity to show his talents.

"He is an exciting player who I am sure will be well appreciated by the Edinburgh supporters. He is ambitious to succeed as a professional player in Europe and we are confident that he will successfully make this transition with Edinburgh."
