Edinburgh Rugby introduce cash turnstiles
Edinburgh Rugby are introducing cash turnstiles for their Magners League and Heineken Cup matches, starting this Friday (3 November) when they play Cardiff Blues at Murrayfield.
The decision was taken having reviewed ticket operations after the club set a new European crowd record at their 25-14 victory over Leinster on Sunday (29 October). The 5,867 strong crowd was the biggest attendance for any of the 62 Heineken Cup pool matches played in Scotland by Scottish teams to date. Previously, the record was 5,764 set in the 2001/02 competition while Edinburgh's highest European attendance was 5,163 when they played Bath the same season.
Comparing Sunday's crowd figure with other sporting events in Scotland over the weekend, only four SPL matches attracted greater numbers of supporters through the turnstiles.
Edinburgh Rugby's Executive Chairman, Alex Carruthers, said: "We are delighted with the number of people who came to Murrayfield on Sunday and the fans present provided fantastic backing to Edinburgh as they battled to defeat a formidable Leinster side in the Heineken Cup.
"Our crowds have increased dramatically this season and while this is extremely encouraging, we fully appreciate that we need to improve our match day customer service levels. We are operating with inherited ticketing and operational procedures which no longer meet our requirements and recognise that Sunday's ticketing operation was below the level of service we would expect to provide. We would like to apologise to the fans who were in the queues. Having reviewed the situation, we hope the introduction of cash turnstiles will help reduce the time it takes our supporters to get to their seats.
"We would encourage all of our supporters and those thinking of coming to one of our events for the first time to buy their tickets in advance by phoning 0845 0943640 or by visiting www.edinburghrugby.com. There are discounts available by buying early, but please note there is a two to three day deadline for ordering special offer and reduced price tickets ahead of games so they can be posted out.
"The Club is also looking at other ticketing and operating solutions including providing tickets via mobile phone texts as we continue to improve our performance levels. But in the meantime, we ask fans to come along early so they can enjoy our pre-match entertainment and avoid any potential queues for tickets."
Edinburgh Rugby season tickets will also be available at a greatly reduced price after this Friday's match. The ticket, which allows entry to the eight remaining Heineken Cup and Magners League matches this season at Murrayfield, will cost £90 for adults, a saving of £70 on turnstile tickets, and £30 for concessions for children, students and pensioners.
Edinburgh's next Magners League match is against Cardiff Blues this Friday (3 November). Please note, the kick off is at the slightly earlier time of 7.10pm, due to television coverage.
