GUNNERS ACADEMY TAKE 7s HONOURS
Edinburgh Rugby Academy Sevens team secured a victory at the weekend by beating Melrose 33-24 in the final of the Cartha Queens Park Glasgow City Sevens tournament. The team consisted of a mixture of Edinburgh Rugby professionals, academy and Edinburgh club players.
The journey to reach the final included wins over Glasgow Academicals, Cartha Queens Park and the Sale Academy team which included Dave Blair, brother of Gunner Mike. The Edinburgh outfit defeated Sale by an impressive 31-0 victory in the semi finals with Ben Cairns touching down four times in the first half.
The final against Melrose produced easily the most accomplished opposition as Edinburgh Rugby Academy found themselves 24-14 down at half time. However an outstanding second half which saw three unanswered tries took the team to victory and was augmented by a tremendous defensive effort.
Phil Smith, national academy coach for Edinburgh, said: "Saturday saw a group of young Edinburgh players coming together and performing without the normal pressures of professional or age-group or club rugby. Their effort and commitment was a credit to all who have been involved with these players and hopefully we will get a chance to defend the trophy next year. For Alan MacDonald, Ben Cairns and Steven Lawrie it was terrific to see them come through unscathed and hopefully now a little bit better prepared for the upcoming U21 World Cup and certainly from their performances I am hopeful they will be some of the top performers within the squad. For Greg Leitch and Matt Coupar I hope they enjoyed rubbing shoulders with some of our younger professionals and found it to be a positive experience."
