Steve Jones played for the Borders for a couple of seasons and played in the same U21 team as Dewey and Callam. Usually plays 10 or 15 but I think he also played in the centres for the Borders as well.

He's looked a decent player on the couple of occasions I've seen him. Relatively small but pretty quick.

Did anyone listen to the streaming audio from Canadian radio. It was very amusing! Good on the lads, at least one Scottish team won yesterday. Rolling Eyes

13 Rob Dewey (Ulster)
12 Calum MacRae (Edinburgh)
11 Jim Thompson (Edinburgh)

10 David Blair (Edinburgh)
9 Greig Laidlaw (Edinburgh)

1 David Young (Leicester Tigers)
2 Fergus Thomson (Glasgow Warriors) CAPTAIN
3 Ed Kalman (Glasgow Warriors)
4 Fergus Pringle (Edinburgh)
5 Dan Turner (Glasgow Warriors)
6 Scott Newlands (Edinburgh)
7 Alan MacDonald (Edinburgh)
8 Stevie Swindall (Glasgow Warriors)

Substitutes

18 Jon Dunbar (Leeds Carnegie)
19 James Eddie (Glasgow Warriors)
20 Colin Gregor (Glasgow Warriors)
21 Gordon Ross (Saracens)
22 Matt Dey (Edinburgh)

Scotland ‘A’ team head coach, Rob Moffat, has made five changes to the starting XV that defeated Canada (26-10) in their first game of the 2008 Barclays Churchill Cup in North America on Saturday.

Anticipating a fast-paced game against the Argentina Pumas, who are also very physical up front, Moffat has called on the rugby sevens specialists in the squad to take the team forward. The new names in the side include new wingers Andrew Turnbull and Jim Thompson as well as scrum-half Greig Laidlaw – all of whom will make their debuts at ‘A’ level.

Speaking from the team hotel in Kingston, Moffat said: “I was encouraged by the performance against Canada on Saturday, but there is still plenty room for improvement. I know the game took a lot out of the players and every member of the 22 made a significant contribution to the win.

“An important aspect for me is the attitude and commitment of the players and how every member of the squad has worked hard and trained hard to give us the best possible chance to develop our attacking and defensive game.”

In addition to Turnbull, Thompson and Laidlaw, Moffat has promoted stand-off David Blair to the starting XV with Scott Newlands getting the nod in the back-row.

Hope we get the ball out to Andrew and Jim reasonably quickly, they could do some damage if they put the foot down.
A bit of common sense rotating the players in the heat.
Good luck to the team on wednesday night. Smile

Given the occupant of the 13 jersey, I fear that Turny and young Thompson are in for a quiet night.

I think you may be right Martin, I saw the Canada game (recorded as was stuck to my pc watching the proper game) and I noticed that he is still a one trick pony battering ram... real shame because he does have gas and the ability to beat people, but got his caps as a battering ram and reckons that is the way forward.

Although he is sticking to his battering ram style of Play, I did think Dewey had a good game tonight. Turny also took his try well and there was a good bounce for Thompson.

Looked a bit shaky towards the end of each half, that definitely needs tightened up before the final, whether it be Ireland A or the Saxons we play.

Hopefully if it's Ireland we can repeat the McDiarmid park score Very Happy

BELIEVE!

Dewey is pretty much built for crash ball, but he showed he can have good hands when encouraged with his behind the back flick pass to Turny for the first try.

I think a lot of our backs have the ability to be as good as the Welsh backs can be - and were in the 6N - but I think Hadden discourages it and demands that players stick to his p!ss poor game plan. This is evident when they play for other coaches at A level and suddenly start to try things.

I think Deewey was much more what he can be last night rather than what he is being told he should be if that makes sense? Took his try well, using pace and power - if we are sticking with big 12 approach for Saturday can we fly him down instead of Morrison (less likely to spill in the tackle). Thought Thompson played well - looked assured. Given the majority of the team do not get regular 1st team starts (and some not been on bench, such as Newlands) thing they did very well. Most of the Argentinians had caps to their names (albeit 1 or 2)

I am guessing teh Saxons in the final - could be tough but not impossible.

They took their foot off the pedal again and let the opposition back into it for the second match.
Dewey was deservedly MoM. He should keep his place but I think there will be a few changes in the backs both players and positions.
It will be very hard agains the Saxon's and the pack will really need to perform to stay in the game.
Good eye opener for some of the less experienced team members.

Team for match against England Saxons....

15 Steve Jones (Newcastle Falcons)

14 Mark Robertson (Edinburgh)
13 Rob Dewey (Ulster)
12 Calum MacRae (Edinburgh)
11 Roland Reid (Edinburgh)

10 Gordon Ross (Saracens)
9 Colin Gregor (Glasgow Warriors)

1 Ed Kalman (Glasgow Warriors)
2 Fergus Thomson (Glasgow Warriors) CAPTAIN
3 David Young (Leicester Tigers)
4 Fergus Pringle (Edinburgh)
5 Dan Turner (Glasgow Warriors)
6 James Eddie (Glasgow Warriors)
7 Alan MacDonald (Edinburgh)
8 Stevie Swindall (Glasgow Warriors)

Substitutes
16 Andrew Kelly (Edinburgh)
17 Stuart Corsar (Rotherham)
18 Jon Dunbar (Leeds Carnegie)
19 Scott Newlands (Edinburgh)
20 Mark McMillan (Wasps)
21 David Blair (Edinburgh)
22 Jim Thompson (Edinburgh)

I wonder if the selection of Mark Robertson ahead of Andrew Turnbull indicates that the former is likely to be a first team pick for us next season? Like most Edinburgh supporters, I guess, I haven't seen Robertson play yet, but Moffat must rate him.
