Bath fall to Edinburgh
29 August 2008, 11:01 pm
Match report by Simon Clark
A cloudy and humid Friday evening at the Rec saw Bath fail to complete a treble of friendly victories over Celtic sides as they went down 8-19 to Edinburgh.
Bath got off to a great start. A good Bath move saw Joe Maddock make a run down the right hand side of the pitch and jink his way past the opposition defence before popping the ball to Nick Abendanon who then used his pace to take him over the try line and score. Shaun Berne was unable to convert this time round but in the 17th minute he slotted over a penalty to give Bath an 8-0 lead.

Bath went down to 14 men briefly after Jonny Faamatuainu was sin binned for an infringement. Bath then nearly scored in the 32nd after a kick and chase by Andrew Higgins saw Edinburgh just being able to prevent Bath from scoring as players from both side scrambled to put the ball down over the try line.

The rest of the half belonged to the boot of Edinburgh fullback Chris Paterson who hit three successful penalties to give the visitors a 9-8 lead going into the break.

Six minutes in the new half and with Bath pressing the Edinburgh line, a Michael Claassens fumble saw Edinburgh substitute David Callum kick the ball ahead and use impressive ball control to subsequently take the ball 60 metres or so down the pitch, before winger Simon Webster collected it and scored.

In the 57th minute, Edinburgh captain David Blair created the final score of the match when he made a good break which ultimately resulted in a Steven Turnball score. Paterson missed the penalty but Edinburgh led 19-8.

The biggest cheer of the match was left for Bath substitute Matt Banahan when his first touch of the ball saw him make significant yardage before a number of Edinburgh defenders were able to bring him down. However more Bath possession did not result in more points on the scoreboard and Edinburgh took the honours.

Erm! When did David Blair become Captain?

Well done two wins against strong teams, whatever next. Who's giving the 150/1 I might just have a piece of that. Hopefully we can get off to a flyer on friday against the European champions. Very Happy

Delghted to read the result in the paper this morning. Very Happy The lads are really showing what they can do, and that is not even with a settled team. Also, there seems to have been 'missed chances' in both friendlies which could have lead to the scores being rather higher.

Our defence has always been good, but we seem to be getting more tries. Is this the result of the ELVs? How will the changes affect Munster?

Anyway, whatever happens next, it has put a smile on my face! Smile

ANDY Robinson has a house less than a mile from Bath's Recreation Ground and it was an enjoyable homecoming for the Edinburgh head coach last night.

Keen to provide his side with a stern final test ahead of the regular season, Robinson saw Edinburgh warm-up for next weekend's opening Magners League game against Munster with an outstanding success over the Guinness Premiership giants.

In fact a second summer success over one of England's foremost clubs cannot fail to give the capital city side a significant boost for a tough first month in which they also tackle Celtic League champions Leinster, in Dublin, and the Llanelli Scarlets, on home soil.

Once they had come to terms with the new Experimental Law Variations, a task which took the visitors 15 minutes, they were more than a match for one English rugby's elite. In fact such was their domination for periods of the second half, that the 11 point winning margin could have been far greater.

Still, they had to come from behind after Bath had taken an eighth minute lead through full back and England cap Nick Abendanon. Bradford Bulls rugby league convert Shantayne Hape, making his debut for the west country powerhouse, timed a pass to perfection to release wing Joe Maddock and in turn, Maddock sent in Abendanon for a fine try.

Australian fly-half Shaun Berne added a penalty from 15 yards soon afterwards and, with the line-out struggling to provide decent ball for skipper Mike Blair to set his backs on their way, it had the look of a long night in the West Country for Edinburgh.

Still, after soaking up the pressure of the European Challenge Cup champions, the confidence levels suddenly began to rise.

Chris Paterson, back with Edinburgh after an ill-fated stint last season down the road in Gloucester, looked comfortable with ball in hand and positive with the ball at his feet.

So, when Bath gave the prolific goal-kicker three seperate opportunities infront of the posts, he duly obliged to give Edinburgh a single point advantage at the interval.

The cohesion and pattern that Robinson needed in this final run-out before meeting the Irish region began to appear.

And, although the kine out was a cause for concern, Edinburgh were ble to take control of the contest in the second period, with Blair at the centre of everything positive.

They were rewarded for their endeavour after 46 minutes when Bath fumbled on the half-way line to allow replacement David Callam to hack on down the left.

Wing Simon Webster rounded the lone defender, opposite number Andrew Higgins, to cross unopposed.

All the invention came from the Scotsmen in attack but they were equally as impressive when the home side, containing four English internationals, tried to break their defence.

Tirelessly, the midfield and back row crashed into tackles which frustrated Bath and saw them make errors which were directly attributable to the pressure they were being placed under.

Edinburgh soaked up the last attacks sent their way in the dying moments and understandably, Robinson walked away with a broad smile.

There are sure to be tougher examinations than this during the season, but there will be few sides who leave the Rec this season with a victory under their belt.

Robinson was delighted with the win but disappointed with two shoulder charges on his players, Nick De Luca and David Blair.

"It was a good win for us, but I will be looking at the match video at two shoulder charges on my players that I thought were dangerous," said Robinson. "I am disappointed by it and there needs to be something done about that. It's a tough individual game at its best, but there are issues there and after I have looked at the video, I will be making a decision."

I'm sure everyone who went down found it a totally worthwhile experience. thumbright

In light of the cost involved, I just prefer to save my money for competitive away matches. Smile

For anyone that was there, how did our backs play when De Luca went off? It's possible we'll be without him as well as Cairns next Friday, so just wondering how McCrae, Easson & D. Blair looked vs Bath? Should we be worried or relaxed?

Try telling David Blair and Nick De Luca it wasn't a competitive match.

It obviously wasn't everyone's idea of a must see match I prefer ticking off another venue I've seen Edinburgh win before doing the rounds of all of the Magners League teams again.

Blair went off injured about half way through the second half after a big clash of heads with Lipman. (surprised that it didn't figure in teh variosu reports - the match was held up for a good five minutes and at one point they were bringing stretchers on)

I got a bit confused - the team sheet bore no relation to the team that actually took the field - about who was on and who wasn't, but we were running dangerously short of players towards the end and it says a lot about the way the squad has developed in the last year that they all pulled together and put up a strong defence in the last quarter despite some of them playing in the wrong position. (Mustchin ended up on the wing marking Banahan after he ran through Mossie and Hugo.)

At least I got the last laugh over the guy in front who had shouted 'Come on Bath - it's only Edinburgh' at the start of the match.

You could say we found a dead wasp in a cold Bath.... Smile Two scalps in as many weeks....

Had a great night at the match - really nice to meet Watty and pals - together we made a right old racket for the Lads - had a couple of flags up too - got right up some Bath noses sat behind us... Wink

I've nearly got my voice back and I've made converts of the rest of the family - all 9 of us that were there!

If anyone wants to see some pictures from the game - they are on my picasaweb site: http://picasaweb.google.com/leemassie - they are a bit grainy as my sister kept using the digital zoom - but I was too busy watching the game to notice... Wink Still you can see all Mossy's penalties from the first half and a few good action shots too. Also what looks like one of the shoulder charges....! Clearly no use of the Bath arm in the tackle!!!! Shame the shirt number isnt there to - for a proper Name n Shame! http://picasaweb.google.com/leemassie/edinburghvbath29082008/photo#5240812289843924546 - no need for that kinda thing! Hope Andy chases it up and gets a result too!

Yeah got some more spots - got to meet the three big Ali's - Smile First time meeting Ali Hogg - what a nice bloke - all the girls in the party liked him too - must be that amazing hair gel - not a hair out of place after a hard 80 minutes!

Watty - Sorry we didnt get to chat more - I neglected the rest of my family as it was.... plus we managed to make the earlier train so we were home by 10pm for a few bevvies and bombay mix! Wink Hope Bath was a enjoyable as the score line - very attractive city... the local beer was alright too.... (mind you most beer thats 'local' does me fine! The Rec was like having Murrayfield in Princes St Gardens! Smile How cool would that be - less of a walk from the city centre.

I'm already pencilled in for the Wasps game in December - even got a corp hospitality seat with EMC (and they know I wont be cheering on their Wasps boys!) but am very tempted by the Newport game at the end of the month.... anyone going - maybe a bus coming down?
