|
|
From the BBC website
Scottish Rugby chief executive Gordon McKie says he is "100 per cent" behind national coach Frank Hadden.
Hadden has come under pressure after four losses in this year's Six Nations and another defeat to Argentina earlier this month.
The Scots won their second tour match against the Pumas and the coaching set-up will be reviewed in July.
However, McKie says Hadden will remain beyond the autumn Tests against New Zealand, South Africa and Canada.
McKie has also ruled out the creation of a third professional Scottish team.
Scottish Rugby disbanded the Border Reivers franchise in 2007 and had looked into the possibility of starting a new team in either Aberdeen or Stirling.
But McKie says he is happy with how Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors are operating at the moment under the Scottish Rugby banner. |

| Just when you think things are starting to look up. Hadden was expected but we need a third team asap. |

Ah, the dreaded vote of confidence...
I suppose basically the SRU still can't afford to set up the third team - surely the demand is there from a rugby perspective. Hopefully if Edinburgh and Glasgow can build on what they've achieved this season they'll become less dependent on SRU funding in the long run, and it can be looked at again in due course. |

I really hope that is the thinking, and from a certain point I see what McKie is doing.
Keep Hadden as coach thereby saving money in giving him the bullet and replacing him. Also keeping him there means Lineen and Robinson stay with the two pro teams who should continue to progress, hopefully meaning more fans will pay to watch.
Hadden may even be able to win a few (with input from Lineen and Robinson to keep things respectable).
When the overdraft has been reduced and some of the younger players become established in the national side, establish third pro team.
Kick out Hadden and replace with two of aforementioned. By this point they will be easily replaced as pro teams may be more attractive.... |

| Hadden on a rolling contract so would cost nothing to "allow his to pursue opportunities outwith the SRU" come November |

Before the 6 nations we had positive play and improving performances from Glasgow and Edinburgh. The 6 Nations campaign from the outset was abysmal.
Fast forward assistant coaches get the sack - btw the body language of both Tait and Graham at the press conferences to me said they did not want to be there - head coach stays.
Trip to Argentina assisted by Lineen and Robinson - one near win and one win - Lineen and Robinson say they won't assist and will concentrate on their club duties.
Head coach gets vote of confidence from Mr McKie on Reporting Scotland and is pretty vague about everything else. Is the SRU a one man band, is it Mr McKie's personal property?
This is a huge mistake which will cost Scottish Rugby dear! After the AI's I think people will stay away and the finances will disappear down the plughole. What will Mr McKie do then. |

I'm glad this is the outcome. At least we know that AR will be staying as head coach next season, and we need that stability.
Previous comments from AR and SL suggest they won't be staying on as assistants. Who'll get these jobs? Perhaps an opportunity for Rob Moffatt, who did well at the Churchill cup. There aren't many other Scottish based candidates, so maybe an overseas coach? Redpath has been suggested, but I can't see anyone giving up a full-time position at a GP side for what is so clearly a part-time role. Any suggestions? |

| I am not surrised by this decision and as suggested above its possible McKie is hedging his bets financially as well as in terms of stability of the national team. Unfortunately though it could be taken as a chicken decision too. Hiring a name coach involves risk. But it is a big mistake in terms of giving the national team every opportunity to get good results. Hadden is a poor coach at this level and appears to be the clear reason for the team's underperformance. So not surprised but its the wrong decision. |

| If Hadden's going to continue as Scotland coach long term, he clearly needs strong assistant coaches to keep him right, so to speak. The appointments of the permanent successors to George Graham and Alan Tait will be crucial in my opinion. |

I hope that this is the one and only reason that Hadden has been retained for now. I'd personally like to see a full time manager appointed instead of a full time head coach.
We could then have a part time coaching team of Moffat and Munro with additional input from AR and SL on a part time part time basis. |

I can just imagine the advert for the assistant "Assistant Coach / Scapegoat required, must be prepared to be sh@t on from a great height to save FH's butt from time to time" |

Should this not read "all of the time."
And add this to it ..."must also be willing to get no credit when things actually do work out as that will be taken by Hadden and Mr McKie." |
