Various points here but I tend to agree with Special K.
It seems expectations were maybe not unrealistic but getting ahead of themselves? I think there are many different factors at play this year for example with Munster taking the league seriously, no rwc etc. Teams have also strengthened. No disrespect to our very promising young players but although our squad is bigger I wouldnt say it is a lot more experienced. What i mean is the other teams have raised the bar even further than last year and thats why i thought its possible we would finish lower in answer to crichtons question.
I am not going to debate winning versus how we win. Its ironic that point should come up after a game against munster who along with leicester are the experts of grinding out a win. "There are no pictures on a scoreboard" and the scoreboard is sole arbiter of fact. Fact is we were still in the game and its not that long ago we would have crumbled badly. Im not trying to be controversial with the hysterical word but i find it strange that the usual positivity has drained so quickly thats all. |

First match up for the new season and we are complaining that we only got a bonus point against the European champions going down by 5 pts. What a difference 12 months makes.
If it had been on a dry pitch I think we could have won.
Plenty of effort and endeavour but the match sharpness was not quite there. On the line breaks we made there was a clear player on the opposite side from which the ball was passed. At the end of last season we were aware of support on both sides. I'm sure the coaching staff will be working on that pdq.
The thing that concerns me at the moment is the number of injuries we have. |

I agree, however, would you give any credit to Edinburgh for still being in the game with 5 minutes to go and but (big but) for a couple of wayward passes, could have got a (undeserved) victory?
Munster failed to put us away which should concern them and please us. |
If Munster failed to put us away - and I agree that was a major factor in us still being in the game - that's their problem, not ours. Had we been a bit more clinical we could indeed have punished them and snatched victory at the death, but it would definitely have been more a case of them chucking it away than us being worthy winners. Had we done so I might have been more inclined to believe all the talk of us being title contenders, as winning when you don't deserve to is a skill that all champion teams seem to have. As it is, we have once again been found wanting in a big game. The only consolations seem to be that it may have been down to early season rust - something which will only become clear as the season progresses - and that we got a losing bonus point that our performance, in my opinion, didn't merit. That could be important later on in the season if we are indeed to be up at the right end of the table.

Reviewing the start of the season perhaps we should have our own pre-season tournament.
Looking at the two Scottish performances Glasgow seemed more cohesive in worse conditions down in Newport. They had four warm up matches we had two and a bit. Not a complaint but perhaps we should try playing what would be our first team at least once before we get into league business.
Munster slowed the pace of the game to suit their strengths. Perhaps we would not have deserved to win the match overall but at least Chris Paterson's boot kept us in it.
I'm sure a review of the match DVD will highlight to Andy Robinson and Rob Moffat where we were not up to scratch and they will make the changes accordingly. |

I might be wrong but did we lose a good 5 or 6 games at the start of last season? |

You mean that time when we were picking up the pieces after Carruthersgate? We only won one of our first six matches. I'm not sure I see the relevance though - our circumstances are somewhat different from then now.

Having watched the ML highlights, the Embra game and a couple of GP games at the weekend, it's clear most teams are struggling with the ELVs, especially numbers in the lineout and rucks.
Lets lay off the moaning (me in particular on Friday night) and give them Sept to work out the kinks. |

Im sure that was unsettling but its an excuse. I could more understand if youd said it was getting used to robinson. This time theres a different set of rules to play by. Im not making excuses for them they should play better but munstr were not good neither were wasps. I didnt see bath game but i kind of agree with jrp. If it happens v leinster and the next game or two after then theres a problem. Not now. |
