Well that was much much better - real urgency and drive.
Robertson had a real stormer apart from the brain fart in the dead ball area.
Godman back on form and De Luca scored a peach.
Southwell confirmed he should spend the season on the bench.
Forwards were much better, scrum was solid - but the lineout continues to be a worry. Back row desperately needs Rennie back, it lacks shape.
Lewis was his usual bizarre self - how he didn't bin Stoddart for closelining Turnbull and then bin Newlands for being offside summed up his performance. |

dam right jrp that was a step in the right direction after last weeks shocker
great showing by including mossy who seemed more at home at full back
well done to robertson who has proved me wrong at his ability
only minor tweaks needed in the line out and we are cured
personally thought alan lewis did quite well until those 2 weird calls  |

Excuse me, but why should Hugo be ditched?
Maybe he didn't do the flashy stuff but he did what he was asked to do. He certainly competed against the opposition. Maybe the opposition was different but McCrae does not hack it against tough dudes.
Phil Godman had a pretty good game and Alan Macdonald certainly put his name down at 7.
Well done gentlemen, you certainly brought back the belief !
Looking at what Leinster did tonight, do not have any fears they are unbeatable. |

Were you watching the same game as the rest of us?
Hugo had his best game in an ER shirt this season & perhaps last season too.
Solid centre play & with a decent kick or two behind the Scarlets defence. he also added needed weight in our defence as Mossy is physically light compared to most of the players on the field.
I would rather have Hugo starting than MacRae.

Much better from the whole team tonight. They looked lively and creative from the start, and my only criticism is that we missed another 3 very easy try scoring opportunities. The lineout wasn't great, but looked better once J.Hamilton and Kelly came on. Still work to do there.
I thought Southwell performed well at 13, and looked more solid than McCrae. Other excellent performances from Robertson, Blair and de Luca, and I thought Godman had his best game in a long time. His kicking from hand was very good, he varied the game nicely and had one cracking line break.
By no means a perfect performance, and we need to tighten our game up at times, but overall a very satisfying and entertaining evening. Shame the crowd was only 2,600 - the Scarlets is always one of the more entertaining matches of the season. |

| Oh, and I should of mentioned Mossy as well. He had an excellent game at full back, and brings a lot more to the team's attacking options from that position. He must be played at 15 from now on, surely. |

Excellent stuff. We should have won by more but that just emphasises what a spectacular recovery this was from last week - not in my wildest dreams before kick-off did I imagine that I'd be sitting here disappointed that we only won by 20 points! Also, since I've devoted a lot of space on this forum to blathering on about how long it takes us to get going in home games, it would be remiss of me not to mention what a great demonstration this was of what happens when we start a game as we mean to carry on - we started like a train, forcing a turnover on the Scarlets' ball on the very first phase and kicked on from there to be the better side, the odd defensive aberration and lineout malfunction aside, for much of the game. Hopefully this performance will have given the players more belief that they can dominate teams at Murrayfield and make it into the fortress it needs to become.
Oh, and I'm inclined to agree with MB2004 on the subject of Alan Lewis's performance - he didn't seem to me to do much wrong for a lot of the game, but letting Morgan Stoddart stay on the park despite blatantly lamping Andy Turnbull and then sending Scott Newlands off for, well, what? Breathing on an opponent? I will never understand the mind of the referee...

Agree with most of the posts, this was an excellent win and hopefully it marks the start for us getting back to winning ways. Full marks to all the team for shrugging off last week's nightmare and playing with a lot of confidence again.
Not too many mentions about Blair's contribution, is that because we have become all too used to his first rate performances and come to expect that from him as the norm? His reading of the game is absolutely first class, he took way more than his fair share of high balls and put in some excellent covering tackles.
Hugo had a solid game, a missed kick to touch going the wrong side of the corner flag being the only blemish I can recall. Otherwise very sound. But Mossy's performance must make him first choice full back now - no questions defensively and a real threat in attack.
As for Alan Lewis, I also agree with MB2004 and DL#1F in that he had an OK game, but was astounded that Stoddart only got a telling off, after Lewis clearly went to his pocket. As for Newlands going off, nothing much in that alone but Lewis was getting hacked off with Edinburgh giving away penalty after penalty and had obviously told Hogg that he'd show a card on the next one, so no complaints really. |

I would rather Kitty and Southwell were nowhere near the 13 jersey - both are journeymen how offer nothing in a crucial position.
A small thing 15mins into the match sums up Southwell for me - very loose play on the west stand end - Mustchin lays off a little soft pop to Southwell, who proceeds to guddle it as is his wont. Instead of holding his hands up, he stares at Mustchin and shouts at him for an alledged poor pass. Not like Southwell I admit (shouting at a teammate) and clearly the pressure of his place is having an effect but the dropped pass was just him, he has hands like feet and no acceleration or pace. |

I think in an ideal world most of us would agree but with five but of the six recognised centres, in the squad, injured at the weekend then Hugo was required to fill in, and did a pretty steady job by all accounts (barring yours of course).
As far as MacRae is concerned he was at 12 for the game V Leinster and I thought he was one of our better backs although I appreciate that is hardly a compliment as we were dreadful. But MacRae has made it clear he prefers 12 and he did a great job there for Scotland A in the churchill cup. So if he is played at 13 then we have to realise that he like Hugo is not playing in his preferred position and mistakes are bound to happen.
Oh and jrp this is just my opinion, but 13 is possibly one of the less crucial positions in modern rugby. I'm not saying that it is not an important position but I'd personally class 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12 and 15 ahead of it in terms of importance to the outcome of games. |

Have to say when I saw the drop jrp is talking of I did mention something about Hugo having "a case of the Di Rollos" (he did after all used to wear the stupid orange finger-less gloves) but other than that, and the missed touch on the penalty he didn't seem to have any other glaring mistakes. When the side is at full strength I don't think i'd have him even on the bench, but now, when we're missing players he'd retain his place from my point of view.
Thought Mossy did well seeming to either not dance, or at least dance while moving forward. He's not a wing but could well be our best 15.
Also thought Al put in a good shift at 7 showed how we'd missed a specalist 7 when he and rennie were out |

To be fair to Southwell, when he dropped the pass I think is being discussed above, it was a bad pass. ( on his toes )
It was unfortunate because if it had been any other player dropping the ball I don't think it would have been discussed on this forum at all.
How many comments are there on here re Robertson's howler? |
