|
|
Coach Frank Hadden has named seven uncapped players in a squad of 50 who will begin Scotland’s preparations for the busy autumn programme with a training session at Murrayfield next Monday.
Of that group, centre Max Evans and prop Geoff Cross were both part of the national squad’s summer tour to Argentina (though neither had game time); prop Moray Low missed out on that tour through injury; and centre Calum MacRae, scrum-half Mark McMillan, lock Dan Turner and full-back/stand-off Stephen Jones were part of the Scotland A squad that reached the final of the Barclays Churchill Cup in North America.
Wing Sean Lamont returns to the squad after missing the entire 2008 RBS 6 Nations Championship with a knee injury. Lamont has already returned to action for his club, Northampton Saints, scoring a try against Newcastle Falcons at the weekend.
Hadden said: “The purpose of this squad session is really two-fold; firstly to debrief following the Argentina tour; and secondly for the players to be introduced to our two new assistant coaches, Mike Brewer and Graham Steadman, ahead of our assembly for the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Tests in November.”
Scotland won the second Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires – their first Test match triumph in South America – and will be looking to take that form and confidence into the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Tests: v New Zealand at Murrayfield on Saturday 8 November; v South Africa at Murrayfield on Saturday 15 November; and v Canada at Pittodrie on Saturday 22 November.

I don't think anyone knows where Di Rollo is to be honest, since he doesn't appear to be anywhere at the moment |

Scotland training camp disrupted by withdrawal of England-based players
Scottish Rugby can confirm that ten England-based players failed to attend today’s National Squad training camp after having been informed by their clubs that they were not allowed to travel to Murrayfield.
It is understood that the players, namely Alasdair Strokosch, Alasdair Dickinson, Rory Lawson and Scott Lawson (all Gloucester), Sean Lamont and Euan Murray (both Northampton Saints), Rory Lamont and Jason White (both Sale Sharks), Gordon Ross (Saracens) and Stephen Jones (Newcastle Falcons)), were refused permission to attend after Premier Rugby Ltd (PRL), the umbrella organisation that represents English clubs in the Guinness Premiership, instructed each club not to release its players.
A Scottish Rugby spokesman said: “We provided these clubs with ample notice of this short training camp and usual custom and practice has resulted in our England-based players being made available to Scotland for training camps.
“We are obviously concerned that our tried and tested relationship with these English clubs has been upset by the sudden intervention of Premier Rugby and as a result of today’s non-appearance of so many players, we have made formal representation to the IRB, the world’s governing body, to resolve this matter.
“ With the IRB having decided to determine the RWC 2011 draw based upon world rankings at 30 November, it is absolutely imperative that this matter is clarified quickly and well before our final preparations begin for the critical Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Test matches against New Zealand (8 November), South Africa (15 November) and Canada (22 November).
“It is essential that our National Squad players are suitably prepared for these games and we will be seeking further information from the IRB to ensure that Scotland has a clear understanding of the IRB ‘s regulations governing player release for international matches and preparation. The IRB’s first port of call is the RFU, the governing body of the game in England, and we await the outcome of their discussions with interest.”
In addition to the absence of ten English-based players, Glasgow Warriors hooker Fergus Thomson also missed today’s gathering as he was seeing a specialist with regard to a shoulder injury.
Meanwhile, Scotland head coach Frank Hadden today confirmed that both pro-team head coaches, Andy Robinson (Edinburgh) and Sean Lineen (Glasgow Warriors) would be involved in Scotland selection for the November Test matches.
Hadden said: “I believe it’s important that the men who see the players on a daily basis are involved in selection. I will also be tapping into Sean’s intimate knowledge of New Zealand rugby and making use of his experience in that regard during the Autumn Tests. |

I would refer Captain Haddock to the following:
IRB Regulation 9
REGULATION 9. AVAILABILITY OF PLAYERS
9.1 A Union has first and last call upon the availability of a Player for
selection and appearances for a National Representative Team or National
Squad of that Union and all attendances associated therewith, including
training sessions.
9.2 Subject to Regulation 9.5 below no Union, Association, Rugby Body or
Club whether by contract or otherwise may inhibit, prevent or render
unavailable any player from selection, attendance and appearance in a
National Representative Team or National Squad, including training
sessions, and any Player must be released upon request by his Union.
Perhaps Mr Muck-eee should have a word in the shell-like of Der Englander coaches/teams & get tough on them. |

| Problem is taht there are windows to involke said regulations. Agreeed windows run from the week before autumn internationals, week before 6 nations and a few other times - this is not a window. He is also looking at 2 rather than 1 week before the first game of AIs |

The only time period I could find in Reg 9 is:-
9.4 When a Player is selected by a Union to appear in a National
Representative Team or attend a National Squad session or participate in
associated activities, (including training sessions),1 if the Player is unable
or unwilling to appear, attend and/or participate, then he shall not be
entitled to play for a Rugby Body or Club for the period for which he has
been, or should have been in attendance with the National Representative
Team or National Squad, plus an additional 10 days thereafter, unless the
Player’s Union agrees otherwise in writing.
I may well have missed the part about 'windows', but it would appear from the basic premiss of Reg.9 that Premier clubs are ignoring the point of having Int'l agreements for player release.

World rugby's governing body is trying to negotiate a short-term solution to Scotland's club-v-country row.
Scottish Rugby complained to the IRB after England-based players were not released for a squad camp by the Guinness Premiership's umbrella body.

| The answer to this club v country problem is to restructure the international and club seasons so that they don't clash. The southern hemisphere teams don't seem to have any problems so why can't we rearrange the northern hemisphere competitions to fit better? |
