The Sunday Herald has an article on the apparent policy for selection in international matches.

I don't think it would be in the very best interests of the team plus it would leave the Edinburgh and Glasgow sides very depleted when the players are on six nations duty & such.

Sean & Rory Lamont (Sean in amazing form right now, scored yet another try to beat wasps on Saturday), Jason White, Nathan Hines, Scott Murray, Scott McLeod, Scott Lawson, Rory Lawson, Euan Murray, Cusiter, Simon Taylor and Strokosch to name but a few. There are a lot of regular Scotland starters in that list.

They can't all try and play for either Glasgow or Edinburgh, that would halt the development of other young players coming through as the 2 pro teams can only handle a maximum of around 70 players between them.

Hadden OUT!!! Mad

We haven't enough talent to be picky like that. Hadden is even more of a ******* idiot than I thought if he thinks we can start to ignore the talent outside Scotland.

I'd fancy the following team of exiles V any team picked and coached by that muppet Hadden.

15. R.Lamont (Sale)
14. Walker (Ospreys)
13. Dewey (Ulster)
12. Kydd (Bath)
11. S.Lamont (Northampton)
10. Ross (Saracens)
9. Cusiter (Perpignan)

1. Young (Gloucester)
2. Fitzgerald (Toulon)
3. E.Murray (Northampton)
4. Hines (Perpignan)
5. McLeod (Scarlets)
6. White (Sale)
7. Strokosch (Gloucester)
8. Tayor (Stade Francais)

16. S.Lawson (Gloucester)
17. Dickinson (Gloucester)
18. S.Murray (Montauban)
19. Gray (Northampton)
20. R.Lawson (Gloucester)
21. McColl (Doncaster)
22. Danielli (Ulster)

Oh and if this is the thoughts of Brewer and Steadman that have brought this change of tack then they both need the bums rush too. Have they not noticed that things that work (to an extent) in Ireland won't work in Scotland as there are 50% less opportunities for home based players. Rolling Eyes

Are they all really this thick at Murrayfield?

More rather depressing reading with the same "favouring the home based players" sentiment as the above article echoed by Hadden here too.

New reality is kicking in for Hadden

Oh great- so because Frank Hadden is too lazy and stupid to follow players outside Scotland, the team will be selected based on his mates and favourites instead of skill and form. Wait... how is that different to before?

And how is Hadden any better than Matt Williams before him? Was this not his idea first with the "Fortress Scotland" rubbish.

It seems like this must be a favourite idea of coaches who have worked in Ireland before darkening our shores, seeing as Brewer and Steadman are all for it.

How much longer do we have to put up with this muppet in charge?

Let's not select S.Lamont, Stroker and E. Murray because they play in England. Aye, right.

And as for the so-called success of the Argentina tour, when we failed to pick up enough points against a very depleted home side to get us seeded at the next WC, perhaps Hadden should stop trying to spin his way out of trouble, drop Parks and get the team to start winning by playing decent rugby!

I thought what was being said was that the Haddock wants 2 weeks with players before a game - he can obviously do this with the Scottish based players but with others he may struggle to get them for that. It also said that coaches would be reluctant to stop a player attending sessions as their subsequent non-selection would lead to grumpy players.

Anyway, lets be honest, coaches are always going to favour the players based on their doorstep - England, Ireland, Wales, France, Tri-Nations... it is not laziness, it is practicalities... if you have a chance to watch 8 of your players in Edinburgh or 1 in a venue in France that has no direct flights where would you go?

I would imagine that Hadden spends most of the week watching tapes sent to him by players based outwith Scotland - not a bad job!

But we cannot afford to be so picky because we haven't the talent available to us, especially whilst we have only two pro teams. We need to pick the best players for the job whether they play in Scotland, France, Wales, Ireland, England or Timbucktoo.

And as far as having the players two weeks before a match, does Hadden not remember being a club/pro team coach where he bemoaned the fact that he lost players to the international set up at crucial times.

The man is a fool who changes his ideas with the weather and blames others for his short comings.

Captain Haddock shows all the skills of a goldfish when he picks the team.

He either hasn't he knowledge of the rudiments of selection (pick the best team you can) or he is being over-ruled in his selections by Mr Muck-eee.

Either way, he should front-up and resign & let a coach with testicles choose the team or expose the higher-ups for what they are.

Wanting the players for 2 weeks - fair enough. The practicalities of getting to somewhere in France, never mind Gloucs or Northants more difficult than the Aussie coach getting to watch super 14 mathes in NZ, SA or even a few thousand miles across Oz? Doubt it. Frankie boy would rather sit in Edin watching videos.
