You can take the quote different ways, he said we want 40 quality players. That's not to say they aren't augmented by youngsters and a few journeymen. If you lost the players who are "quality" at the moment we probably have keys than 40. Also if you look at the emergency signings of the likes of Lay and Rizzo they are probably better than we could get to come and sit as fourth choice, it's a risk but not a huge one.

What I would say is that the signings so far have been top end and really we are only losing CDP who has been a consistent performer. If we can get Scott and a scrum half then I think we have a strong first choice team. We then mood to look for depth in the likes of the back three.

I think things are definately looking up.

You can read it as an endorsement of the lads he's keeping on.

You can of course interpret it a number of ways, but the comments I saw were about shipping people out and improving quality. Hence me wondering who's coming in instead. Could of course be sour grapes.

I think that there's a different reason for each of those moving on.

du Preez - many young Scottish back rows coming through, need to give them opportunities
SHC - not good enough for the money he's asking and may be one of those who perpetuate the 'occasionally good' problem
Weir - needs a fresh start tbh
Tovey - VdW and Hickey viewed as better quality
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

That's great news he's steadily getting better and better.

Yes indeed, very pleased about Dean re-signing. He is starting to do some good stuff at 12 and is beginning to look the part, the way he is improving he could be a key player for Edinburgh.

He's a player that has really benefited from getting a decent amount of game-time.

I wonder what the score is with Burleigh, now that Chris Dean is signed up? He's had a few injuries this season but I get the impression that he's valued as a senior player amongst the backs.

With the squad reducing to 'around 40', I wouldn't think signing a 6th lock is a nailed-on certainty. To get down from 44 this season to 41 or 40, three or four positions will have to be vacated. You can get away with 5 centres rather than the current 6 (moreso if you have a spare 10 to play I/c centre, which it seems we won't) and ditto locks, where you can always draft a BR player in like Mata or Bradbury.

Can't see any other position where you can shed a player without risk. Most of the Pro 14 have 12 front rows, but a couple have 11, either they failed to recruit the missing one or they have a player or players who can play in more than one position, as McCallum. If that player gets injured of course, you are down to 9 front rows, which is no way enough for a long season and you are likely going to have to recruit a lot of injury replacements.

Good news on Dean, still obviously has rough edges but has been consistently improving for the last couple of seasons and could be a big player for us for a long time if it continues.

Some dissappointments in the news but I feel that the good news outweighs this, good also to know this early who we want and then who/what positions we still need to fill.

It is significant (to me at any rate) that if you go onto Shedweb they are universally sorry to see him go and wish him well. The consensus seems to be that he was a good player for them limited by injuries, but has started to show his worth again as he gets fit.
