5 and a half year gap in appearances for Farndale! He hadn't even done headshots for the team announcement vid (sponsor on his sleeves not on the others!). Great stuff, delighted for him.

Leinster put out a first XV. Huge, huge test for these lads.

Great to see CHH on the bench as well.

We have put out many a worse team but a little bit of a second XV feel to it based on early season form, or Cockerill really has developed strength and depth.

Part of it will be that we have played a fairly settled side so far and there will be some requirements around the Scotland internationalists, combined with our game next week against a pretty solid looking Treviso probably being more important in terms of the league campaign.

My memory may be failing but I think we put out a similar strength team las year. They brought out their big guns for their first run out for the season and we gave them a bit of a scare.

Yeah ran them close last season.

I think it is a good team, of the pack all but Mckenzie have a Scotland cap, backline looks good with a decent balance in the centre and plenty of power on the wings. I think it is great that of a starting team that strong maybe only 3 or 4 would be first choices, a sign of progress.

Does indeed look like we're not really going for a win in this one. Decent enough side, but unlikely to be one to beat a strong Leinster team on their own patch. Still, squad rotation is necessary, and some of these guys need game time Is Lewis Carmichael injured?

I am trying to follow on twitter but sounds like we have had enough possession but our attack coach has maybe not come up with the goods... Usual story of lacking a cutting edge?

We're playing a very forwards dominated game.

Kennedy and Fowles are terrible... bad skills, mistakes and absolutely no game management. Continue to be amazed they got contract renewals.

Not really. Felt like there was a 30 minute stretch in the middle where we didn't touch the ball. But when we did have the ball we had about as much attacking threat as normal.

Positives:
Maul defence was strong, and our tackling in the tight was very physical.
VdM is still ridiculous
Solid debuts for Cherry and Farndale

Negatives:
Without a lot of opportunities we ruined the ones we had with poor discipline
Defence out wide was poor - Dean didn't have his best night
No real attacking patterns
Halfbacks didn't exactly shine

Normal service has been resumed, but thats what you get when you put out a weakened team against the likes of Leinster. Also we are in dire need of competent halfbacks and a decent attacks coach.A lot of players posted missing in that match,a real shambles. On that showing we deserve to be bottom of our conference, worrying season ahead.

I am a supporter rather than a former player and accept that my comments carry little weight. In my humble opinion our 12 was woeful and does not deserve a first team place. The early five minutes spent at the Leinster line that may have led to a try was painful to watch. Even without the commentary pointing out the obvious try scoring opportunity out wide, the casual observer would be disappointed by the repetative battering ram tactic. I am a huge fan of the team. I regularly attend home games and some European contests. The Pro14 results this weekend tend to suggest that the underdogs have upped their game tactics wise and it would have been a huge boost to my confidence in Edinburgh if they had displayed some innovation tonight. There is no question of the effort displayed by the forwards but many questions around back play remain unanswered.

Going 30 phases of pick and go inside the Leinster 5m line and getting nothing for it is pretty damning of our forwards ball carrying and our attack. This stuff will work against average sides but anybody with a physical, disciplined and patient defence will be able to hold out.

Imagine how many tries Van Der Merwe and Kinghorn would get if they were playing for Leinster.

I'm not going to try and defend that performance (it was p!ss poor) but maybe need a wee bit of persepctive here. We fielded a weakened team away to the best team in the league, and got a hammering for our trouble. It was a poor result and an even poorer performance, no doubt, but I'm not sure what more was to be expected?

Yes, we're also bottom of our conference, but we've probably had the hardest start to the season of any team in the league.

The season isn't a write-off just yet. Very big performance and result needed against Treviso next week though. And if not, and we're still bottom of the conference after that, then I'll start to be concerned.
