Jason Tovey Tribute Thread

Postby Martin Bell on Sat Apr 02, 2016 4:17 pm

Just thought I'd start one up so we're prepared to pay homage to The Tovenator as he rips up the Pro 12 in the coming weeks.

It's scary to think what he'd be like with hair the quality of Gavin Henson or Leighton Hodges.

Scary.

A characteristically astute point. The Gavnor is rugby royalty, mind, and very few can take a tan as well as he.

On the other hand, The Tovenator appears to be in the early stages of curating a hipster beard. As we all know, that gives the wearer superhuman powers.

I thought this was an interesting article: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/rugb ... t-11090437 It gives an insight into why he wanted to move. I see he is unfazed by Duncy's arrival in the summer, which is encouraging. Hopefully he'll feel welcome in Embra and both parties will want him to stay longer. We can do our bit by making him a cult hero.

His performance on Friday made me ask myself when we last had a genuine 10 who was not in the 'promising youngster' bracket. Maybe it's my age, but I was struggling to think of anyone since veteran stand-off Duncan 'Hodgey' Hodge. If we play our cards right, we'll have two of the blighters next season.

According to the Pro 12 stats, Tovey is the competition's most successful goal kicker this season, on 82%

Well if he plays in the last 3 games for us it looks like at least we will win something this season!

Interesting one. I saw him more as a 'utility back'. I don't recall him playing 10 but am probably mistaken.

Let's keep this thread On-Tovey...

I think he's a bit too much like Weir. Having him on the bench next year won't really make a big difference because their styles are so similar.

He's similar to Weir, but I think that's a good thing. One of the reasons Weir has suffered at Glasgow is he's a very different player from Russell. Glasgow are set up for Russell's style, so Weir's game has suffered. Tovey is different enough that we can play the same system but he offers something slightly different (in particular he keeps his hands high and offers the hand off in the tackle - that's the kind of difference off the bench that might give a breakthrough.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.
