Edinburgh v. Harlequins 22.10@3:15

Postby gowrie on Tue Oct 18, 2016 7:52 pm

Romain Poite the man in the middle for this one.

Harlequins obviously got off to a strong start last week, given the traditional French lack of interest in this tier this and the return fixture will likely decide who wins this pool, so it's a must-win if we want to progress.
It'll definitely be a challenge, but Quins don't have the best away record this season, and a good number of players who were rested last week should be ready to go for this game.

potential 23:
1. Sutherland, 2. Ford, 3. Nel, 4. Toolis, 5. Gilchrist, 6. Bradbury, 7. Watson, 8. Manu
9. Kennedy, 10. Tovey, 11. Hoyland, 12. Dean, 13. Tofilau, 14. Allen, 15. Kinghorn
16. McInally, 17. Dell, 18. McCallum, 19. McKenzie, 20. Mata, 21. du Preez, 22. Hidalgo-Clyne, 23. Bryce

A bit out there for the bench, but I think we'd be better off using the great depth in the forwards, having du Preez and Mata coming on with 20 minutes to go would be a belter, and we're not really overloaded with backs with form demanding inclusion.

Would be happy to see that xv starting might include Tom Brown in starting with Allen on bench instead of Bryce.
Will Nel and Du Preez be fit? Never happy with 2 backs on bench specially with our injury record.
Hope we get a victory nothing like stuffing the English.

Mata covers 2nd and back row so you wouldnt need Mckenzie and Du Preez, either or. Seems unthinkable that Du Preez wouldnt make the 15 never mind 23 when fit but it shows the improvement there as well as his form dropping off slightly.

Other than that, pretty strong side. Dean has looked better at 12 so deserves another shot. When is Burleigh back?

Last ER injury update on the 14th says 'in the coming weeks'. Rehabbing from shoulder injury, sounds like they're waiting to see how it heals and he's out until some point in November․

no changes to players registered for us in the challenge cup, thought McQullin may have been added as TH cover.

Think Gowries team will be pretty close to what we see hope Watson and Nel are fit up front. In the backs I think maybe Allen at 13, Brown 14 and Bryce 15. with Kinghorn and Rasolea on the bench (Mata dropping out).

It might be a long shot, but given we're hosting the final I think we should give this a good go. A win gives us a great platform, lose and we can likely write off the campaign. Harlequins have a lot of quality - Brown, Yarde, Visser, Marler, Horwill, Robshaw to name a few. So assuming Nel ok:

Sutherland Ford Nel
Gilchrist Toolis
Bradbury Manu Hardie

Kennedy
Tovey
Dean
Allen
Brown Kinghorn Hoyland

McInally, Dell, McCallum, Mata, Du Preez, SHC, Rasolea, Bryce

I'm making the assumption that Watson is injured, if not would be happy with either him or Hardie at openside. Could be swayed over Allen moving to wing and Tofilau at outside centre.

What's increasingly clear is that we have a ridiculously strong (on paper) back row. Manu, CDP, Hardie, Watson, Bradbury, Mata, Ritchie... Given we've lost Denton, Roddy & Coman in the last year, we have real strength in depth. At lock too, with Bresler to come back and Mata an option in the second row.

If we could get a spell with Dickinson, Bresler, Manu and CDP injury-free and match fit, I think we could really push on.

I'm looking forward to this game. We want to see more of the new Edinburgh team!
There's a sense of optimism which is back on this forum, and it's good.
But we still have to find what Hodge is capable of, and this is a good test.

Now you're making me nervous.

Could be a game to show a physical, ambitious side. Could be a thumping showing we're no better, or even worse against better teams.

It will be a good test after a couple of easier games to get our stuff together post Solomons. Hopefully we will have gained some confidence with ball in hand and try and play rugby. We shouldn’t have anything to fear up front where we should at least hold our own but I think the big test will be for the backs, particularly at half back, to see if they can play rugby against a more aggressive defence from Quins and if they can make quick decisions, not panic and go through the phases. Kennedy and Tovey will be key to the game for us, if they cope under pressure then we might do ok, if not then I can see the backs under real pressure and worry we resort back to previous aimless kicking game a la Solomons era. It should be fun!

That's pretty much first choice, barring Dickinson and Bresler, no excuses for not putting in a top performance now. Strong, mobile pack and a fairly solid backline with some threats out wide.

Going to be optimistic, think we can win this by a score or more.

Quin's side announced.

"There are four changes to the starting team that beat Stade Francais last week. In the forwards, Kyle Sinckler returns to start at tighthead, with Sam Twomey named in the second row.

Twomey replaces George Merrick who sustained a neck injury last week. The lock is expected to be out for six weeks.

Nick Evans returns at fly-half, with Charlie Walker starting on the wing.

Danny Care and Mark Lambert are named among the replacements having recovered from a rib injury and concussion respectively.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Harlequins Director of Rugby, John Kingston said: “We are well aware of the tough challenge that Edinburgh will present at BT Sport Murrayfield.

"That said, we had an excellent start to our European campaign last week at home to Stade and are now very keen to back that up this weekend in a competition which we hold in very high regard."

No Visser!

Looks about as strong as they can put out from my limited knowledge of their side. Should be a good tough game.

Viss and Yarde have been on fire recently, so it's a bit of a relief to see his omission. Adam Jones has done an amazing job for them at loosehead where they've been hit by injuries, but he's isn't listed either.

I really don't know what to expect, three or four weeks ago we'd have been hammered by them, now... who knows?

Quins fans seem to have mixed feelings about their chances because their away form hasn't been great this season. Looks like they will have several hundred travelling up for the match. It should be a good free flowing game. The Quins fans have been complaining about too many handling errors. Sounds familiar.
