Happy to have a bit of beef added to the back three as Brown, Hoyland and Graham are all diminuative lads. And if he ends up being as prolific as the Weegies van der Merwe was then I'll be doubly happy :)

Got to assume someone has seen him and thinks he has something we're lacking. Here's hoping he's not the winner of the Mike Penn award come the end of next season.

Is Scholes still going to be with us next season? The amount of game time he had last season doesn't indicate that Hodge particularly rates him, which would make his prospects for next season a bit bleak. I would have thought he'd be looking to move on.

Interesting point. All tournaments in the WR 7s series for 2018/19 will be designated as Olympic Events and Scotland will participate in them. But Scotland do not have their own National Olympic Committee. Would be one for the lawyers to pick over I guess!

Fairly unlikely anyway as it's doubtful he'll have a passport before 2018/19 - or even the 2020 Olympics. From an Edinburgh point of view if he turns out well then it'll be a big boost to have him available throughout the Test windows.

Yes, Scholes' contract has a year to run. He is not bad as a back-up 11.

Van der Merve looks most promising, very happy with this signing. Goodness, a big fast winger to keep the oppos honest, things are definitely looking up! If he works out, that's a good bit of business getting a young guy in rather than someone at the other end of their career. Good stuff Edinburgh!

Duhan van der Merwe

Is it as easy as if he has played for SA u20 he's ineligible??

I thought it depended on whom he played against (Tier 1 etc)??

Cockerill's first signing ! It's the first time he is presenting a new recruit. And as this one is coming from the Top 14...
I don't know nothing about the player but coming from Montpellier, he has been picked at young age by Jack White and then noticed by Cockerill. So hopefully, he can be better than our recent signings at wing !

At the moment, 7 non scottish players from 42 professionnal players at Edinburgh, that's a good ratio. We've really improved on this matter.

If I have been keeping up to date, the squad for next season is nearly there - 3 players still to re-sign (Berghan, Bresler Gilchrist) and 2 vacancies (replacement for Bennett for the season, hopefully Fruean, and young replacement for Cosgrove at loosehead prop).

The squad looks like increasing from 42 this season to 45 next, with an additional centre (Bennet, who will be on the books but out of action), a 4th scrummie (Fraser) and an additional 8 (Miller). SRU clearly ponnying up here, the CEO's word is good.

Two positive observations:

- The number of NSQ players looks like falling from the (reputed) maximum of 12 this season to 8 at most next season. Nothing against NSQs at all, they provide some of our best players, but good to see a bigger home-grown contingent in the team, and;

- Encouraging that 6 younger lads have made it to a contract from the academy, well done them and good luck to all. If Embra and Warriors were one day going to be say 80% home-grown Scots, rather than about 50% at present, you'd need 6 academy signings a year (based on an average stay with the club of something like 6 years). Last year, Edinburgh had 2, this is the first time I think we have ever seen 6 - Warriors are also at 5 or 6. Very positive!

I think CdeP will be first-choice 8 and Mata first-choice 6 next season, hence slight shuffle around in current snapshot of team:

Gilchrist was confirmed a few days ago.

Would be very surprised if Bradbury wasn't starting next season if fit - especially if Du Preez plays like he did this year and I don't really think Mata does the nuts and bolts too well - he's a bit of a luxury I think.

Also ... Kinghorn played 10 for the under20s today with Henderson 15 ...

There's a whole bunch of orders on that depth chart I'd disagree with but tbh it's a good thing to have competition. I have high hopes for Cockerill.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Project player?

Can we not just let him play for Edinburgh and get his feet under the table first?

Hunter-Hill's signing makes me doubt about Bresler's resigning. We've got already five second-rowers, and Mata can play there too. Is a sixth player necessary ?

Do you know the make-up of the team?
