The third year of his deal he'll turn 34 at the start of that campaign and it will also be the 16th season of his pro career. I'd say if he plays more than 50% of Edinburgh's games during that time you'll be doing really well.

I wonder when was the last time Heaslip or O'Brien played over 50% of Leinster matches? These guys play the Champs Cup games and a smattering of league games. If Edinburgh are to pull themselves, ourselves, out of the hole we need that sort of depth. Allied to that is the hope that Barclay will be the ideal mentor for Ritchie, Crosbie, Bradbury, Miller etc, his worth could be far greater off the park. No disrespect to the others, but having a new guy come in, someone of that caliber, it can be really inspiring.

I think a similar depth argument stands for Marfo and the looseheads (sounds like a band), we need at least three guys who can slot into any position, hopefully without dropping the standard. Dickinson isn't going to be around as a player for too much longer even if he does get back to full fitness, that leaves Sutherland, Dell and Marfo to cover a whole season of over thirty club games plus eight internationals, even if they all stay fit it's a heavy schedule.

2014/15 for Heaslip; 2010/11 for O'Brien

On paper Van Der Walt looks a good signing. Quite what he makes of sleety Friday nights in Edinburgh remains to be seen, but his CV looks quite impressive, and he should be looking at becoming our starting 10. Tovey has been playing really well recently, so hopefully this means we'll have some decent quality competition in this position. What it means for Weir also remains to be seen, given his very ordinary (putting it kindly) performances for Edinburgh in the last year.

It's good to see us getting players signed up earlier in the season, rather than it all happening at the end of the season or in the summer.

Barclay is an excellent signing to be a leader of this club. He knows what it takes to win the Pro14. And will help Crosbie, Ritchie and Bradbury no end.

Van Der Walt is an interesting one. We'll see how he goes but I reckon spells the end of Weir at Edinburgh.

Of the out of contract list I think Toolis will have suitors and Hoyland might go to find regular rugby. Unfortunately could see him as a bit of a Lee Jones at Glasgow.

Also, it was interesting to hear Toonie say CdP hadn't really recovered and was in constant pain last year training and playing so he wasn't as fit or confident as he is now.

Delighted with this signing. 2 year deal makes sense, though Barclay saying he would like to keep playing beyond this; time enough to sort that out down the line.

Needs a new thread though, as isn't really right in an Edinburgh Squad 2017-18 one :)

Good to see it confirmed. Fabulous signing for us, I think he and Cockers will get on well.

Twitter rumours (so could be nonsense) that Kiwi 10 Simon Hickey is on his way to us from Bordeaux.

Tighthead prop Elliot Millar-Mills signs from Yorkshire Carnegie for the rest of the season. Scottish qualified - has one sister who plays for Scotland and another who plays for England.

Already with the team in South Africa.

It was confirmed he had a fracture, so going to be 6 weeks I would think. Also with Nel and Berghan missing for 6N and Bryce doing a passable impersonation of Nick Beavon, we desperately need more cover with a bit of experience beyond the academy to come in alongside McCallum.

But Fife and Johnstone are not. Looks like Cockerill won that tug of war.
