Caullie Lug 2016/17

Postby The Feral Goat on Fri Mar 03, 2017 1:27 pm

Will start the new thread

Pedro – please correct anything if required.

The Caullie Lug award was started as recognition for commitment to the jersey over a number of years as epitomised by Chunk. Awarded by ERSC and voted for by the fans.

Past winners

2014 – Roddy Grant
2015 – Ross Ford
2016 – Anton Bresler

Quick search suggests last season an article mentioned commitment over a season rather than years (not that Bresler was undeserving of the award) so probably good to clarify this point now.

looks like in the past there has been a few players shortlisted each season to be voted for.

Discuss :)

With that clarification, I'm definitely throwing Tom Brown's hat into the ring again.

The Supporters Club will be speaking to ER on this. Our preferred option would be to have a short list, as was the case when Roddy and Ross were winners. We will post something soon regarding nominees and voting.

Commitment to the jersey is something which has been sorely lacking recently.

If Nel signs a new contract, dont care if he hasn't played he is getting my vote!

Hamish Watson.

Not only our best player but been consistently giving it all for Edinburgh for a few years now.

Or Al Dickinson - a good servant who might be reaching the end of the road.

Toolis, Nel and Watson for me and whilst happy for all three to win, I think Ben should get it this year. Consistently good and has played more minutes than anyone.
Bill Mata. The second coming?

Maybe worth mentioning on Ben Toolis: he has played in 32 consecutive matches for Edinburgh, starting 31 of them. The last time he missed a game was against Cardiff Blues on 30th January 2016 - over a year ago.

It is outstanding, particularly given he had been carrying the fight with little help.

What happened to player manager t protocols? How can he have been allowed to play so many games on he trot?

Because he isn't considered a core international.

Think we have also had breaks in our runs of games eg Munster match rescheduled, AIs etc have meant there has not been 6-7 week period with a match every week.

The Scotland second row is a very tough nut to crack but the leaps Toolis is making every season I can see him getting a spot on the bench over Swinson who I still think is a shade too small for international second row - I'd like to see him play more 6 off the bench.

Was impressed by Bradbury this season, got himself a Scotland cap and got me a ton of points in the fantasy Pro 12 game so everyone's a winner!

Not too many stand out players though, not really any consistency either through injury or form

Watson has been the player of the season but Toolis for the Caulie Lug.
