Edinburgh v Connacht 19:35KO 7 APril

Postby The Feral Goat on Thu Apr 06, 2017 12:18 pm

Acting Head Coach Duncan Hodge has made six changes to his starting Edinburgh Rugby side for tomorrow night’s Guinness PRO12 clash against Connacht at Myreside (kick-off 7.35pm) – live on BBC ALBA.

Nathan Fowles starts at scrum-half

Four of the amendments are made in the back division, with two changes named in the starting pack.

Glenn Bryce starts at full-back in place of Blair Kinghorn, who is currently on duty with Scotland 7s. Another change of personnel in the back-three sees Rory Scholes taking up a spot on the left-wing.

It’s all change at half-back with Nathan Fowles and Duncan Weir replacing Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and Jason Tovey respectively.

Ben Toolis has recovered from a back injury and is named in the second-row where he will be joined by fellow incomer Fraser McKenzie.

Stuart McInally will make his 100th appearance for the club if he is to be called upon from the bench.

Hodge said:

“We played a lot of good rugby last week, but once again a lack of consistency and high error count marred our ability to dominate the game for long periods. We’re continuing to work hard on cutting out such costly mistakes as we search for a full 80-minute showing.

“We want to provide a good performance for our home support, and need the basics of our game to be in order with an attitude and intensity to match. That will give us the platform we need, and help us control the game.

“Connacht will be hungry to bounce back from their defeat to Zebre, but we hold home advantage and want to make that count tomorrow night.

“Finally, congratulations to Stuart on reaching the cap milestone. He’s a great player, a real club man and a brilliant guy to have around the squad.”

Damien Hoyland retains his spot on the right wing to join Bryce and Scholes in the back-three.

Phil Burleigh and Chris Dean continue as the midfield partnership.

Ross Ford will again captain the side from hooker, and is joined in the front-row by Murray McCallum and Simon Berghan.

Viliame Mata, Hamish Watson and Cornell du Preez form the back-row trio.

Players unavailable due to injury: Magnus Bradbury (knee), Jack Cosgrove (ankle), Allan Dell (concussion), Alasdair Dickinson (foot), John Hardie (knee), Sean Kennedy (foot), Nasi Manu (shoulder), WP Nel (neck), Rory Sutherland (groin), Jason Tovey (groin)

Seven changes for trip to Edinburgh
06th April 2017

The Connacht side has been named for tomorrow night’s clash against Edinburgh at Myreside (7.35pm, live on TG4).

There are seven changes to the team beaten in Zebre last weekend with Ireland internationals Tiernan O’Halloran and Kieran Marmion among the players to be drafted into the starting XV.

Set to make his 100th PRO12 appearance, O’Halloran has been among the top full-backs in the competition again this season with the most metres gained and more carries than any other player.

With five personnel changes in the backline, Marmion starts at scrum-half and Niyi Adeolokun, having shaken off a niggle, also returns on the right ring. Danie Poolman switches to the left flank while Steve Crosbie makes his second start for the province at out-half. After making his return from injury off the bench last week, Eoin Griffin is handed a starting place and will partner Bundee Aki in the centres.

There is one change to the front row as Dominic Robertson-McCoy replaces Finlay Bealham with Denis Buckley and Tom McCartney retaining their places.

Quinn Roux and Andrew Browne remain in situ in the second row with Eoin McKeon moving to blindside flanker as Jake Heenan has recovered from a minor shin injury to start at openside flanker. Captain John Muldoon continues at no.8.

Shane Delahunt, JP Cooney and Bealham provide the front row cover with James Cannon, Sean O’Brien, Caolin Blade, Jack Carty and Josh Rowland completing the replacements.

Ahead of the clash, head coach Pat Lam said: “This is our third away game in a row and after last week’s game in Italy, we have an opportunity to produce a performance we can be proud of.

“Although we have been creating numerous opportunities to score, it is all about making sure we take those chances tomorrow night.

“Edinburgh are always tough, physical opposition and we are looking forward to a big challenge on our first visit to Myreside.”

Don't detect much interest in this fixture on here! I'm actually feeling confident we'll win this one, with Hamish leading from the front again. Connacht always play attacking rugby, weather's looking not bad, so could be a decent game.

Chris Dean does a hell of a lot of media work these days, with him captaining the Melrose 7s team and age grades you have to wonder if he's seen as a future captain of Edinburgh?

Needs good coaching before that of course.

Aye - should be a good game. Keep Aki on the right side of the gain line and we'll have a chance. Not able to go to the game, unfortunately.

Error, follows error, after error yet again. Depressing!

This post is just typical of the glass half full happy clapped on here. If you want to be realistic, repeat the word 'error' far more often. :(

A lot of our signings and coaching appointments seem to be 'Glasgow did this three years ago, let's try it'.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Even the good play is just to maximise frustration, isn't it?

Simon Berghan's effort is worth highlighting. Remember when we all said "he can scrum, but he's just not fit enough"? Played 70+ mins tonight, and more often than not was the guy shooting up in defence.

Shouldn't have let him get that flat in Leith.
