Strong looking Newcastle side, so difficult evening (or should that be afternoon?) in prospect. Still, it's only a friendly, so result not the most important thing.

Strong looking Edinburgh side too.
Ford, Dell, Nel, Toolis, Watson and Hoyland (and Mata?) will come back later as starters, but I guess it's very close to Cockers' first pick team anyway.
Baggott and Crosbie still in the mix.
As Hodge is still there, Dean is still third choice at 12  .

Will be interesting if Baggott gets game time over Tovey.

Dean not getting a game at 12 is frustrating, Fife getting a real shot at a contract, would like to see Farndale, Johnstone, Fenton and Grant get significant gametime to show what they can do.

It is interesting Cockers has mentioned a young captain and Ritchie has started both matches...

Yeah, I'm glad for Fife too. Time to deliver again, boy !

Ritchie wouldn't be my first choice for captaincy. I really like him and I'm happy to see him play at 6 but he is too young. I'm not so bold. The "young" stuff is just an excuse for not nominating Ford as captain.

Toolis is quite obvious for me. Or HClyne.

I never subscribed to the point of view that the performance is more important than the result in preseason games, it's good to get the win chalked up going into the first league game, though following on twitter is frustrating.

I look forward to the dispatches from the front line

I thought there was a general step up in intensity. The line out was much more competitive and I thought the defence kept up the intensity without offering as much space on the outside. Sam appears to have worked wonders on his service, our try came from him throwing a massive miss pass directly to the wing. Gilchrist had a decent game and was aggressive both with ball in hand and defensively. Front row creaked a bit at times. We still look a little stodgy in midfield but that improved a bit when Tovey came on.
Overall a decent performance

Oh and it appeared Bradbury was captain!

First trip to Melrose for a pre-season match and thoroughly enjoyed it. I leave the on field observations to more experienced contributors but was most impressed by the hospitality extended by Melrose. The inflatable pub was a nice touch. Ice and lemon with the G&T(£3) and the same cost for a can of Best was most refreshing. It made me wonder if similar pricing at Myreside wouldn't help in building that atmosphere. It would certainly encourage me to Get them In There. Sorry to stray off topic. Could I tentatively suggest that SHC's passing was somewhat erratic?
