Didn't hear the 5 live slot, but there was an interview with Cockerill in yesterday’s print edition of the English Times ( £walled ), which normally treats the PRO12/14 with utter indifference. It didn’t even include it in an article on which sports channels offer what rugby. Obviously because Cockerill is English there’s an angle for readers dahn sarf.

Most of the interview content aired before, but he again majored on club culture. Not sure if this comment has been posted elsewhere, but he gave as an example when Ed Slater took the 4 jersey at Leicester – “that’s Martin Johnson’s old jersey – honour him by wearing it well”. Cockerill always knew he was wearing Peter Wheeler’s old No. 2 ( or B ! ) jersey.

He gets no sense of that at all at Edinburgh – no jerseys on display, no honours board for internationals, Lions , no nothing. History since 1872 in a cupboard somewhere.

He's doing and saying the right things – just now need to see the players back it up.

Cockerill was on the Thistle Podcast as well, not had the chance to listen yet.

“He gets no sense of that at all at Edinburgh – no jerseys on display, no honours board for internationals, Lions, no nothing. History since 1872 in a cupboard somewhere.”

The Murrayfield factor again all geared up for Scotland, as it should be, but again why it is not really a suitable home for ER.

When you think that it's really Edinburgh and The South, there is a rich seam of rugby history to tap into, going back to the very first days of the sport itself. The Borders started the first competitive league, how many Lions came through those Districts? How many Scottish internationals?

The names would mean nothing to the young lads, but the sense of a lineage would, I'm sure.

I don't expect Cockerill to turn this ship around by Christmas, but if we see a team full of players who leave absolutely everything out there on the park, week in week out, it will come eventually.

I feel we are still lacking real depth of quality in the backs, but they should at the very least be given good quick front foot ball, there are no excuses from the pack - with the caveat that we don't suffer at the hands of the injury gods any more than the others sides.
