Caullie Lug 2017/18

Postby The Feral Goat on Fri Apr 13, 2018 12:22 pm

Getting towards the end of the season so time to argue over an ear again.

As a reminder

“The Caullie Lug award is presented to the player who has shown commitment and service to the Club over a number of years as epitomised by Allan 'Chunk' Jacobsen the inaugural winner.”

Past winners

2014 – Roddy Grant
2015 – Ross Ford
2016 – Anton Bresler
2017 – Hamish Watson

The Supporters club normally comes out with an official shortlist, but no harm gathering thoughts and arguing over it in advance, although given one of Cockerills early quotes “Commitment should not be commended, it should be expected really!" perhaps the award itself is under threat or maybe just the criteria for nomination/winning in need of review.

McKenzie - stand out candidate for me
Cockerill - done more in 9 months for the jersey than many have in a number of years.

I'd like to see Cochrane get it. He's always stepped up whenever we've needed him to and it would be a nice retirement present

:above: This, and not for sentimental reasons because he is retiring, but because he is (IMHO) the most deserving of the award, cracking player who I think will be sorely missed, similar in mold to Roddy Grant in that he was always fully commited until the final whistle and could never be accused of hiding.

I cannot think of a more worthy recipient than Neil Cochrane this year with a special commendation to Richard Cockerill.

Ooo, my first instinct was Fraz, he has epitomised the good stuff this year, sheer bloody hard work, but Cochrane is also a good call

It’s Friday night and you come up with a question like this! FFS my only thought was beer or Guinness followed by whisky or brandy, now I may need to keep the thinking head switched on, for a wee while anyway.
I’m thinking along the same lines as K-PAC though.

Its nice think we are sitting with choices, too often the winner has been one of the few guys who look like they give a toss!

A lot of guys have put their hand up, Lay and Rizzo stepped in a competed well, Marfo has been good, although like Berghan his best has been in a blue shirt. Fraz has been a totem and Gilchrist has got back to his best. Bill and Ritchie have stepped up too.

I agree though Cochrane or Fraz, both have been excellent. Arguably Fraz has had his recognition as captain. I always thought it was an unsung hero type award and that is Cochrane for me.

If I had to nominate a back, and it pains me to do it, but I would say Dean, he has always given 100% effort and has really stepped up. His work as an extra flanker at times has been brilliant and we really miss him for that when he doesn't play.

Cochrane for me.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Yes, Cochrane for me too, a guy who gives his all and never lets his standards and commitment dip or slip.

The vast improvements this season seem down to the attitude of one man, Cockerill.

He gets my vote just for effecting the attitude change that Edinburgh Rugby have been crying out for for a decade.

Cockers hasn't been here for a number of years which puts him out of the running.

Maybe Gilchrist - outstanding and has come back from a tough period. Same with Fife and McInally, would be okay with Cochrane too.
