Updated

Qualifiers
AP - Exeter, Saracens, Wasps, Newcastle, Leicester, Bath, Gloucester
Top 14 - Montpellier, Racing, Toulouse, Toulon, Lyon, Castres,
Pro14 - Glasgow, Leinster, Scarlets, Munster, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Ulster

Seedings

Pot 1 -
Pot 2 - Glasgow, Wasps
Pot 3 - Leicester, Edinburgh, Toulouse
Pot 4 - Gloucester, Bath, Cardiff, Ulster, Toulon

I'm thinking I'd like to avoid Saracens and I'd rather not have Toulon from pot 4. I'd rather not have Ulster either, mainly because I don't like them.

Seedings

Pot 1 - Saracens, Leinster, Castres, 2 from Montpellier/ Exeter / Scarlets
Pot 2 - Glasgow, Wasps, Racing, 1 from Newcastle/Lyon/Munster, 1 from Montpellier / Exeter / Scarlets
Pot 3 - Leicester, Edinburgh, Toulouse, 2 from Newcastle/Lyon/Munster
Pot 4 - Gloucester, Bath, Cardiff, Ulster, Toulon

Remember you can only draw a team from your own league if they are from pot4, so the only pro 14 teams Glasgow or Edinburgh can draw are Ulster or Cardiff.

How do the seeding work Biffer? Is it not formulaic based on season end positioning and if so, why are there still issues to resolve with all games now concluded?
Bill Mata. The second coming?

Any idea when the draw is? (or at least when it was last year).

I think it's because there are five teams in each pot, so only two of the second reached teams can be in the first pot. In not sure how they decide which two, though. Might just be drawing lots.

That’s right, it’s by drawing lots. So two second place teams in pot one, on second place team in pot two.

I’ll take Exeter, Lyon, Bath.

Certainly no easy groups going.

I would think winning home games would be an outstanding achievement for us at this stage.

Well, Castres, Newcastle and Ulster presents a number of winnable games.

Absolutely. Two home wins, home qf in the league, re signing important players, that's the standard for next year.

I'd quite like a really tough draw to really test the players, I don't think we'll get through the group as we're not there yet so 6 blood and thunder battles would be useful.

Would be good experience for a Pro14 challenge.

Thought I'd run the possible permutations for Edinburgh in tomorrow's Heineken Cup draw. In terms of which 1st and 2nd seed you can get:

If Top 14 and Premiership runners up are drawn in Tier 1:
• Castres + Wasps
• Saracens + Racing
• Montpellier + Wasps
• Exeter + Racing

If Top 14 and PRO14 runners up are drawn in Tier 1:
• Castres + Exeter or Wasps or Newcastle
• Saracens + Racing
• Montpellier + Exeter or Wasps or Newcastle

If PRO14 and Premiership runners up are drawn in Tier 1:
• Castres + Wasps
• Saracens + Racing or Montpellier or Lyon
• Exeter + Racing or Montpellier or Lyon

There are 18 permutations in total. Most likely top seeds are Castres and Saracens (both 5/18 possibilities) then Montpellier and Exeter (both 4/18).

2nd seeds it's Finn Russell's Racing 92 and Wasps (5/18 each) with Newcastle, Exeter, Montpellier and Lyon 2/18 each.

From the 4th Tier it's not quite an open draw as Ulster cannot go into Leinster or Munster's pools and Cardiff Blues cannot go into Scarlets pool. That means there's a 1 in 3 chance Edinburgh get Ulster. 1 in 4 chance for Cardiff Blues. 1 in 5 for each of the other 4th seeds.
