Academy players 2018/19

Postby royc on Sat Jul 28, 2018 10:12 pm

Being reported on the GW site that 3 of our Stage 3 Academy boys are off to Stade Nicois this season, Cameron Hutchison, Archie Erskine and Hugh (?) Bain, with Ross McCann rumoured to be joining the 7s squad.

With George Taylor, Jason Baggott and Charlie Shiel all signed up for ER and Tom Gordon off on a partnership deal with Warriors, it only leaves half a dozen Stage 3s in the Academy* out of the 14 names last season. The Academy system is looking like a successful conveyor belt of young talent, with a good number winning initial Pro contracts.

I reckon there will be quite a big Academy intake announced soon, when do they normally announce the new boys?

* The remaining 6 are Munro (SH), Renwick (H), Dunbar (LH), Winning, Ferguson (THs), Ure (lock).

Stade niçois is a bit of a third academy. They're not pro at all, AFAIK. Except if the deal is "you go down there and if you're doing OK, you'll have a real contract when coming back the following year"... But I don't think it's the case.

Anyway, that's quite good to see Baggott, Taylor, Shiel, Crosbie and al in a quite youthful squad. Let's hope they will do better than Galbraith for example. Getting a pro deal is not the end of the road.

PS: It's Hamish Bain I think...
PS2: And there is quality coming in too. Darge, Boyle and Blain have been quite impressive with u18 in the last two years...

The academies will be released soon as the age grade games are on now.

Hutchison looked excellent for the Under20s but there's little opportunity to be found here so that's a good move for him - I expect him to make it pro here. Bain and Erksine are more unknowns but again they aren't getting a shot here so getting brutalised by French packs is a good learning experience.

We'll see a lot of turnover at stage 3 for sure. I can't see many being extended of the current group.

Names to watch for me - Darge, Boyle, Miller, Atkinson, McLean and then it'll be interesting to see where Martin Hughes lands as he was excellent. Played for Heriot's last year but apparently a Glasgow boy.

I see Munro and Ure didn't make this year's list, it seems a pretty competitive process, as indeed it should be. Can anyone add what positions these new boys play?

Current:

Fraser Renwick (Watsonians) – Hooker, starting Year 2 in Stage 3
Ross Dunbar (Boroughmuir) – LH Prop, starting Year 2
Duncan Ferguson (Watsonians) – TH Prop, starting Year 2
Dan Winning (Boroughmuir) – TH Prop, starting Year 3

New:

Calum Atkinson (Boroughmuir)
Jack Blain (Heriot’s)
Conor Boyle (Watsonians)
Rory Darge (Melrose) – Openside flanker
Robbie Davis (Edinburgh Accies)
Roan Frostwick (Currie)
Shaun Gunn (Edinburgh Accies)
Findlay Scott (Jed Forest)
Rufus McLean (Watsonians)
George Spencer (Edinburgh Accies)

A wee look at the success rate of the SRA so far since the new set-up came in just over 3 years ago. Test caps, Scotland 7s and a whole rake of pros:

Yeah, maybe it means he's already signed for us next year. There is really an unbelievable competition in our incredibly young back-row.

Rory Darge (Melrose) – Openside flanker (probably more 6 or 8 in the future)
Robbie Davis (Edinburgh Accies) scrumhalf ?
Roan Frostwick (Currie) scrum-half ?
Shaun Gunn (Edinburgh Accies) - loosehead
Findlay Scott (Jed Forest) - hooker
Rufus McLean (Watsonians) - back three
George Spencer (Edinburgh Accies) wing ?

That's a lot of front-row players (6), plus 3 back-three players. And 2 back-rowers and 1 lock...

Here is a summary of this year's Academy with some info on the players where I can find it. Most of the new boys are 18, a couple are 19, so it could be a year or three before they get to a pro contract.

A number may be SQ - Rufus McLean was born in the USA, Robbie Davis and George Spencer were at the same school in Cape Town, I seem to remember that Duncan Ferguson is South African too.

Edinburgh U20s beat Glasgow 62-28 to win the junior 1872 Cup last night.

Great win for the young lads, it would be nice to see that score replicated in December!

Archie Erskine went to Stade Nicois around the same time that Dave Cherry came back to us I think.
Bill Mata. The second coming?

A couple of the scorers are chums of my son. They felt they'd been slightly cheated as Glasgow for some reason did not pick some players going well in the league, which gave Glasgow a ready made excuse for the score.
