Best performance since Toulouse in the quarter final. Yes Toulon were not at the races but as others have said ER did not let them get away with much. Every player put ina shift, Scott was the player he used to be and looks like he has his mojo back, thought Bergan’s tackle in the corner was ace. Excellent team performance from the squad and the coaching staff. If that does not get more people through the turnstiles then I don’t know what will.
Think Cockers is downplaying Edinburgh’s chances but afte today’s result in Newcastle the group is open and the two back to back games will be very important. If Edinburgh perform like that consistently then they will cause other sides a few problems.

That's a good point' were they poor or just as good as we allowed themto be?

We have shot ourselvesin the foot so often in the past we have made mediocre teams look good. Nice to think that might have changed. I feel we lose and it is toa better tea then fair enough but they should have to work hard for it.

Newcastle game will be interesting, 2 very hard working teams with not many superstars but a lot of very good players.

We were great. As great as we could have been probably and we limited them severely as a result. Rugby’s not always about size. We made them look unfit I thought. For me, there’s still an issue in wide-out defence. Their backs are good but they engineered overlaps, often in tight space, all too easily when it looked like they were being herded into touch. There’s something not quite working there. Maybe we just have to go higher in the tackle to prevent offloading. Other teams have done similar eg Benetton.

Think it was a bit of both, they have a lot of quality and did look dangerous at times with ball in hand but we did not allow them much opportunity. We looked fitter and hungrier, our line speed was good all match 73rd minute a full backline up putting pressure on them and Dean gets the intercept for the BP try.

The pack matched Toulons physicality, our set piece went well, Toolis in particular made a mess of their lineout on a few occasions, and there were some nice moves and lines run by our backs.

We have to now back up that performance and play like that every week whoever we are playing against.

Good match report on the frontbpage from Martin, as per.

I haven’t much to add to what has already been said, but first I hope Magnus Bradbury’s injury isn’t as bad as it looked at the time, he is really coming on this season.

I’d love the other guys to have a real go at staking their claims over the coming weeks, we need fierce competition for places to drive this team forward.

I think a lot of thought went into that win.

The Toulon front 5 are not the most mobile of players and we had obviously done our homework and attacked them when they were in the defensive line. We did really well to go through the phases and wait until their front 5 were were struggling to get back and set in defence and then attacked their inside shoulders. Their front row in particular were big slow lumps and were caught time and again on their heels and too square in defence and Scott et al exposed them time and time again. We really worked hard to create and take advantage of the mismatches.

We also did well in moving the breakdown around the pitch and keep the pace up and their pack struggled to get to the breakdown and behind the ball. On the other hand the likes of Nel, McInally, Berghan, Sutherland and Dell are pretty mobile big guys and kept the pace up. By the time their front 5 got to the breakdown it had finished and we had moved the ball on. The only time their big units really got involved was when they were in possession close to our line, they kept the ball tight and we did well chopping them down low before they got any momentum. We did really well to keep their pack down to one try in the tight.

Once the line breaks had been made it was reassuring to see our support lines, not something we have been good at in the past. At times it was like watching the Weegies!

Funny isn’t it? Hodge was getting a bit of an online kicking a few weeks ago, but it looks like things are starting to click.

@doedin, good analysis, I haven’t watched it back yet as I’m away from home but I’ll look out for these points you raise.

I'm still not convinced. The question still remains "Why has it taken until now?".

Solly didn't share his attacking philosophy and had poor talent, he was not the man to take Edinburgh forward on his own, Cockers was focused on the fundamentals first season and now we're expanding our gameplan and have the talent in place to do damage.

Would be the glass half full view.

You have to have the fundamentals in place, it’s a cliché because it’s true. We’ve just started to get proper front foot ball and we’ve only just started to get that defensive press that puts the opposition under such pressure. The backline is entirely new to each other and/or barely out of the U20s.

Why has it taken so long to get a specialist throwing coach for the hookers? You can see the difference it has made.

There are a host of exasperating questions, but I’m more interested in looking forward to be honest. We need to win this coming weekend.

Given how much was wrong I think it’s pretty amazing to have come this far this quickly.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

I’m watching Toulon v Grenoble.

They are all about the power game, not a lot beyond that. They have won and move up the table to 10th, but they will still be in the danger zone when we meet them again in the cup
