There will be plenty of opportunity for the Millers, Wynns, Hodgsons and Atkinsons during the 6N and on into the first few months of next season as the world cup goes on to the first week of November.
Worst case for Scotland is that we get players back for mid-October but they won't be available for a week or so after that - that means our entire pack plus back ups for the front and back row will likely be away.

How many of the back rows will be away for the RWC or Scotland squad?

Not many, we had uniquely bad injuries this year and that's where they got their chance. Barclay, Bradbury, Crosbie, Nayolo, Mason all crocked. I think Darge and Boyle were also injured!

Don't think we'll see Miller, Mason or Wynne without another injury crises. It's not effective development of players. Miller showed flashes but we'll see if he gets more pro chances.

Not many,

Barclay, Watson, Mata definitely for the world cup, the first two for the six nations. Bradbury and Ritchie would be in my squad, I'll eat my hat if they aren't in Toonie's, leaving us with Crosbie, Nayalo and Hamilton from the official team sheet.

The way Hamilton is going, I would not be surprised if he makes it (especially if there are a few inevitable injuries nearer the time). I think he is having a fantastic season and we would have been screwed if he hadn't joined us late on.
Bill Mata. The second coming?

He is indeed having a great season so far, he is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of carries.

I can't help but feel that whilst we are well served for those guys, we have a lot of good ball carriers throughout the pack, we are missing a Bressie and a Manu - guys who hit the breakdown and cleared it out immediately, giving good quick ball.

Some respite from injuries would help out but as said a couple of big mobile guys would keep the game flowing and maybe speed up ball distribution?

bingo!

its amazing how much poor slow ball we get when we have all those ball carriers. Not enough doing the unflashy hard graft stuff. Inept or lazy players or poor coaching? Or all the fault of the backs that the get SteveWalsh slow ball of course?

Great news.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Excellent news about GC. He has been on top form this season, finally getting back to full fitness and international form and would be one of the first names on the Scotland team sheet for me at the moment. I am presuming that he will be the first of many more signings in next few days?

Yeah, as has been said, good news on GG - I noticed the other day that not only do he and Rambo share the same birthday, they have exactly the same number of Edinburgh appearances, Grant has a few more Scotland caps.

Gilcho is a huge part of our pack, it would be great if we could get these guys to stay together and build a midfield to match them in the next couple of years.

Scott out for another two or three weeks after his concussion.

Th e length of time he has been out after a concussion is starting to look worrying. I am sure the club and SRU will do the right thing for him medically, and I very much hope he returns as good as new. But the important thing is his health.

Great news about GG, who is back to his best. Hope we can get Watson re-signed too, he is such a key player as our only specialist openside.

It is abundantly clear that one of the key needs is to strengthen our midfield and create more of a cutting edge next season. Easier said than done though. All of the midfield players are in contract for next season, bar the two 1st year boys (Baggott and Taylor). Hickey and van der Walt at 10, Scott, Dean and Socino at 12, Bennett and Johnstone at 13. There are no vacancies unless someone retires or gets moved on, I doubt the budget is there to carry additional players.

Of course it is all a bit academic if the primary attacking weapon is seen as kicking - kick-chase, kick for lineouts, kick grubbers. This looks to be team orders. Try as I might, I can not really see any discernible plan of attack with ball in hand or any of the many training ground moves that you might expect would be second nature by now.

Certainly need a scrummie who can make a break and pose more of a threat than the current posse.

Having said that, we will probably run in 10 tries today with scintillating midfield play and I will happily munch my hat with cranberry sauce!
