Presumably signed with a longer term future in mind.

Sounds like he's been recommended to the club by one of our SA playing contingent.

Agree FKL.

Also not a great message for any of the current Scottish Stage 3 academy players seeing an SA kid come and take one of a very limited number of Pro team spots.

However that is not the players fault and ER are offering him a great opportunity. Lets hope he has a similar impact to DVDM, he certainly looks a big unit despite only being 17.

I doubt there's a connection with the Matt Scott situation to be honest, this lad isn't going to be in first team contention for a while and he won't be on a significant wage.

And he's not even arriving until December 2020!

Nothing to do with Matt Scott.

There is a picture of the lad on "The Offside Line " site. Yikes he looks about 29 with incredible muscular development for a centre so possibly just an exceptional talent spotted early and not much different from ,say,Blair Kinghorn joining straight after leaving school at 18.
I agree though that with so few professional places available in Scotland this has to be exceptional if we are ever going to develop home grown pros.

I've just watched him in a school game, he is a big, quick, hard-carrying centre. Very direct and effective . They were playing 20 minutes each way, no kicks at goal to speed things up.

He made a lot of carries and a lot of yards.

A brand new tighthead on the way...

Postby The Incredible Shug on Wed Mar 11, 2020 3:55 pm

LEE-ROY ATALIFO

Edinburgh have today secured the signing of Fijian international tighthead prop Lee-Roy Atalifo, who will join the club next season.

https://www.edinburghrugby.org/the-club ... op-atalifo

Aged 31 and comes from Jersey Reds. Ceccarelli replacement.

Will hopefully feel at home with all the Fijian lads and probably more sensible for the budget/squad than having a current Italian international as 3rd choice.

Looks decent, my first reaction was he might be a replacement for Nel, but as mentioned Cecerelli is leaving. If that is the case though it isn't going to give much time for Winning or Macallum to play. We need to be looking to the future, hopefully they will both make it as they look to have the raw materials and talent to do so.

I think we may see Nel winding down in the next couple of years.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Harvey Biljon, head coach at Jersey Reds, has produced a regular stream of good packs, and particularly front row forwards, for the GP over the last few years. A bit surprised noone has given Biljon a higher grade opportunity.
Harry Williams of Exeter / England probably the best known.

Step up to the PRO14 for Atalifo of course so despite double figures of Fiji caps obviously no guarantees. And at 31 he's no spring chicken. But he comes out of a good stable.

Technically we're also replacing Jack Stanley as well.

This takes the tight heads to 5, Nel, Bergs; McCallum, Winning and now Atalfo. Can't see us needing that number, now that Zander F has emerged as first pick at national level and ER may only, barring injury, lose one to internationals. Stanley was needed as deep cover for when WP and Bergs were away but different times.

Does it portend McCallum being moved to loosehead (not a fan of that) or WP hanging up his boots at end of term?

We do need that many. If Zander gets injured two go to Scotland. Berghan and Nel will be managed. Winning hasn't played enough to know how good he is and McCallum has yet to really become a top level TH.

This chap is cheap depth. We won't be getting rid of anyone for a 31 year old from Jersey Reds.
