Caullie Lug 2018/19

Postby Ayton1keith on Sat Jan 19, 2019 10:05 am

Going to be an interesting decision as to who wins this year. Realistically anyone of that forward pack could come out on top this season but for me and I know it goes against the spirit of the award, Darcy Graham, heart of a lion and tenacious in the tackle, I’m sure Eddie Jones would have him playing on the flank

Just a thought.....is the Caullie Lug for players only.......there's a certain coach who I suggest has done the business and transformed Edinburgh into a force to be reckoned with. Whoever got him up here needs a medal.

I would go as far to say they are now the No1 team in Scotland.......and I'm from Aberdeen so no bias.

Schoeman for me. He has given us a harder edge and is a ferocious carrier. Whoever found and persuaded him to join should get a free pie at every game!

If you were asked to describe the perfect prop, he'd be it. I'd include a free Bovril with the pie.

You make it sound like a bad thing! Unless it’s my pie he’s eating, isn’t grand to have to think about who is our stand out performer with so much season still to play.

If Feel a bit sorry for The Schoe this week, must be hard to sit down with Jannie Du Plessis in your back pocket!

Yeah Jannie getting the hook after half an hour was hilarious. He wasn't injured, no treatment, no physio. He got hooked cause he was being eaten alive.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Back to Caullie Lug, to me it has to go to Bill. Forget all the offloads, this lad has had to cover injuries to 'competition' at 8 so playing far more than maybe he should. Barclay, Bradbury and Hamilton all been out longterm. The boy just keeps trucking on...

Reminder of what I understand the Lug is to be awarded for:

“The Caullie Lug award is presented to the player who has shown commitment and service to the Club over a number of years as epitomised by Allan 'Chunk' Jacobsen the inaugural winner.”

We do tend to confuse player of the season with the above when we debate this every year, unless of course the above has been changed over the years and I’ve missed it? With the above wording I can’t see beyond Gilco for this season’s award. Long term servant, back to his absolute best, proven leader and of course he’s going to be here for another three years now!

This appears to now be an official ER fans player of the year award rather than the supporters club award it was in the past?

I think this is the most important element.

We have very little history and possibly even less fan engagement at times, but the caulie lug is a good "tradition" and I think it is important that it doesnt become a player of the year award. It is for more than that, for me is is almost an unsung hero type of award.

Gilcho is that sort of guy, I woudl possibly even mention Hamilton who did a lot of hard work when the big names were away or injured and got very little credit, possibly wont even get a new contract offer.

Just my bias but I am uncomfortable with a winger winning the caulie lug, I dont think Chunk woudl approve, although Darcy sitting big guys down may earn him a pass.
