Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

At least we should be grateful that the double header in SA is AFTER the 6N have finished, even though only by a week and with likely at least 6-8 of our first choices not travelling.

Munster v Leinster on the telly after the Glasgow game at Murrayfield. Could be a long Saturday.

The first fixtures are all about squad depth. We have 11 players at the world cup, here is a list of our opponents and numbers missing, I may have missed the odd one who doesn't play for the country where the club comes from, but I have included Blade Thompson from Scarlets and Nasi Manu (I'm so happy he made it to the world cup) from Benetton.

Zebre 10
Cardiff 5
Leinster 14
Scarlets 12

The group stages of the world cup will be finished by the time the Scarlets fixture comes around, no disrespect intended but Italy are not getting out of a group containing New Zealand and South Africa, so it depends on injuries and rest protocols. Italy play New Zealand on the 12th of October, you'd have to think that Benetton will have their world cup contingent, all 15 of them, back for our game in Treviso three weeks later.

Of course we might have our guys back by then, Bill Mata will probably be with us, though it would be great to see Fiji get through

If Scotland do get knocked out in the pools, and I don’t think they will, the last thing the players will need os to spend a month watching rugby, they will want to get right back into it ASAP.

Even if w make the knock outs, I’m against resting everyone for a be of weeks, I would far rather we staggered it so that we had some players available straight away then taking a break ore Xmas and others the other way around, particularly the likes of Nel and Berghan, Toolis and Gilchrist, watson, Barclay and Ritchie, it makes little sense to rest them all at the same time.

Shouldn’t it be at least partially down to the players if they are rested on return, if some come back and are knackered and want rest so be it, others if they come back raring to go let them and tear up the opposition, player input surely is needed?

I agree, but isn’t there a protocol for rest after an international series?

It's an issue that will need managed throughout the season. These guys have effectively started their preseason and season 2 months ahead of those not involved - and they've built their prep on peaking in September / October. If there's ambitions to be involved at the business end of the campaign these guys need to be fresh enough for that and not running out of steam after nearly a full 12 months of training/playing.

Certainly not the only reason but relative levels of fatigue (phyical and mental) contributed to Leinster and Glasgow (and other sides) losing out to Connacht in 2015/16.

Totally agree with the need for them to get a break, just not all at the same time, bringing half or a third straight back then giving them a rest mid season might be better. Although we will want to use Steenkamp and Douglas while they are here.

Berghan and nel would be the obvious ones to vary rests, possibly graham and k8nghirm too, for Glasgow Horne and price and Horne and Johnson.

Looking at the warm ups and the game yesterday, those coming back will need put on a fitness regime. Scotland haven't looked fit at all imo.
