Scarlets 26th Oct 7:35pm

Postby Tichtheid on Mon Oct 21, 2019 6:09 pm

I thought I'd get an early start on this. Who will we see in the team this weekend? I'm told that flying east to west is not as bad for jetlag as going t'other way, so will we have some of our Scotland lads back?
If we do I think it will be limited to those who didn't see a lot of game time - Ben Toolis, Blair Kinghorn and Henry Pyrgos.
I can't see Blade Thomson being available for Scarlets, but he won't be getting looked after by the SRU so you never know.

There isn't much information on injuries so I'll go with the optimistic outlook and assume we'll have a clean bill of health, with that in mind we could be looking at

Schoey, Cherry, Ceccerelli, Carmichael, Toolis, Steenkamp/Kunavula, Crosbie, Haining
Groom, JvdW, vdMerwe, Scott, Bennett, Hoyland, Kinghorn

Willemnse, Bhatti, McCallum, McKenzie, Kunavula/Miller, Shiel (I really hope we stick with CS), Taylor, Hickey.

Berghan didn’t get much game time either, he might make an appearance!

Would be good if Steenkamp got a run out before he heads back to SA, can only have a few weeks at most left.

I can’t see any of them playing this week. Unless we have an injury crisis Ia particular position, possibly second row if any.

Barclay will be champing at the bit, desperate to prove he isn’t past it, I look forward to him playing soon.

The "bonus" is that they are all fairly lightly played all things considered despite having a long old pre season. For example Ritchie played on 17/08 and 06/09 then had a 3 week gap to 30/09 then a two week gap to 13/10.

They will be desperate to move on and get back on the pitch but it would be a surprise to see many of them this week but we may see some.

Pics on twitter of Eroni Sau in training would be good to see him get a run out as well.

Funnily enough I re-watched his agency highlights reel the other day, he could be a big player for us.

Agree TH, it's essential we keep Shiel on the bench for impact and his development.

Pyrgos and Groom are similar players, Shiel offers something different.

Agreed - but just hope he stays on the right side of the league's notoriously mercurial officials with some of those bigger hits...

Very disappointed that Shiel has been dropped. Poor decision.

Yep, that was my first thought.

On the plus side, Scott back to fitness and Eroni Sau's debut - that is a powerful three quarter line

Reps: 16 Marc Jones, 17 Phil Price, 18 Werner Kruger, 19 Josh Helps, 20 Dan Davis, 21 Jonathan Evans, 22 Angus O'Brien 23 Kieron Fonotia.

Tasty looking backline.

I assume some of the changes are for rotation purposes, but I agree that I would prefer to see Shiel on the bench.

I think we perhaps need to look at any selection decisions over a number of weeks rather than one off selection decisions.

Pyrgos has only made 1 competitive appearance this season off the bench for Scotland. It probably wasn't great for him heading out to Japan knowing he was going to get minimal game time and being part of a pretty poor all round world cup effort. RC has possibly decided that he needs Pyrgos as one of his senior players "back on the horse" as soon as possible and the easiest way is off the bench.

I agree it would be great to keep Shiel involved but rugby is a squad game now and hopefully there will be plenty of opportunities coming up.
