Edinburgh vs Bordeaux

Postby Friday Knight Lights on Mon Jan 06, 2020 10:54 am

I'd expect a first 15 out there as Bordeaux are top of the Top14 and taking the challenge cup seriously. I think a win in Bordeaux would be up there with the win in Toulon.

Funnily enough Agen are bottom of the Top14.

It appears Cockers thinks differently.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Edinburgh make eight changes for tomorrow afternoon’s European Challenge Cup round five clash against Bordeaux-Bègles at Stade Chaban-Delmas (Saturday 11 January, kick-off 12.45pm GMT/ 1.45pm local) – live on BBC Radio Scotland

Five of those alterations come in the pack as props Rory Sutherland and Simon Berghan, lock Sam Thomson, and back-row duo Hamish Watson and Viliame Mata all get the nod for the top of the table contest in Bordeaux.

In the backline, Scotland star Darcy Graham returns to action on the wing, while scrum-half Nic Groom – who skippers the side – and centre Mark Bennett are both selected in the starting XV.

Ahead of the fixture, Head Coach Richard Cockerill, said: “Bordeaux are a very big physical team. I think we’ve got to be smart in how we play and clever around our tactics.

“Of course, there are parts of the game where you’ve got to front up and match them, but we can be a little bit smart in how we approach the game and make sure we don’t get into an arm wrestle that suits them more than it suits us.”

“I want us to be in the Quarter-Finals of the Challenge Cup but Bordeaux have been the form team in Top14 in France – it is a really hard competition to play in and they’ve been consistent. They’ve played 13, won ten, lost two and drawn one.

“It’s a pretty impressive record and they have some pretty good players. My job is to manage my team, go there and get as many points as we can, and give some guys an opportunity to play in a really big game. We’re looking forward to that challenge.”

The inclusion of Graham on the wing is the only alteration to an otherwise unchanged back-three as fullback Blair Kinghorn – a try-scorer in November’s round two fixture against Bordeaux-Bégles at BT Murrayfield – and Duhan van der Merwe keep their place in the starting line-up.

Scotland internationalists Matt Scott and Mark Bennett – both try-scorers in last weekend’s 61-13 win over Southern Kings – link-up in midfield, as Groom partners stand-off Jaco van der Walt at half-back.

Hooker Mike Willemse packs down alongside props Sutherland and Berghan in the front row, as locks Thomson and Lewis Carmichael complete a reshuffled tight-five.

A new-look back-row sees Fijian international Mata return from injury at No. 8 as Scotland duo Magnus Bradbury and Watson form the remainder of the pack.

No lock cover? Not aware that either Barclay or Crosbie can play there - can Mata and/or Bradbury?

The lack of specialist lock cover from the bench is a bit odd. Only Fraz is listed as unavailable, I get that BBT and Gilcho may well be rested due to SRU protocols, but we still have Hodgson.

I guess Bradbury would probably be drafted into the second row if and when it comes to it.

I won't be able to watch this as I'm driving all day tomorrow. We are currently the leading 2nd place team, but we need a win if we are to have a realistic chance of a home quarter final. It's a big ask, but not impossible.

(I've just seen Rico's post as I tried to load mine, I'll leave it as it is even though it repeats some thing he says)

Both have covered there before for Edinburgh.

Can you pick up the radio commentary? Or will passengers be a problem. Hoping to get the online coverage on the tv with radio on for sound.

From Cockers' media chat it looks like he will settle for an away quarter final.

And I think he's right to do so. Obviously I'd be delighted if we were to go to Bordeaux and win, but I don't think it's a disaster if we fail to do so. Obviously a lot of "if" and "buts", but if we could finish as, say, the best runner up, we could end up with an away trip to someone like the Dragons, and a possible home semi-final thereafter.

But even if none of that comes to pass, it doesn't really matter. As ever, the league is what really counts.

That is stronger than I expected.

Which is good as I am sitting in Bristol airport waiting for my Welsh resident son to join me to head to Bordeaux.

We were expecting a pleasant weekend with incidental rugby but we might enjoy that as well now

I imagine a home QF in the diddy cup isn't a massive commercial incentive for the club either.

At the time, always felt our draw with them at BTM would come back to haunt us,this could be it.Should have been sitting on 18 points, taking nothing from this match and more than likely taken a 5 pointer at home to Agen, total 23 points, even if they won Tomorrow with a bonus point win that would give them 22 and an away trip to Wasps. We definately need a win or its going to be away in the quarters,we need to play out of our skins,if we do its winnable, heres hoping.

Away in the quarters is fine.
