I don't think Glasgow are very good just now, their season suggests that.

To lose to them twice is galling, and especially so having won the set piece battle up front over both games, that is supposedly the root of our game.

Shiel made a mistake with a box kick that went out on the full, but other than that the difference in tempo he brings is huge, he has to be our starting 9 from now on.

I agree with this, the tempo was noticeably better but we still needed Mata or Kinghorn to do something phenomenal to get through the Weegie defence.

The coaches absolutely should be going somewhere imo.

Winning the trenches is no longer enough and RC isn't a good enough coach to expand his gameplan. Was the same at Leicester and it is proving the same here. We can waste another season continuing the same path or make the change now.

Nothing in Cockerill or Hodges past suggests it will get any better.

Im no fan of a football style sacking the coaches every year, but we do seem to be playing a game which is out of date. It is the sort of ruby Munster played in their pomp, but we need to evolve that.

2 things are obvious, firstly we have very little imagination in our play, we truck up and truck up. If Kinghorn wants to do something a bit special then great, but if not then keep banging away. It is effective to an extent, but defences are getting better, refs are "managing the spectacle" and you cant milk as many pens from scrums and the laws on turnovers mean it is harder to keep the ball. Unless you happen do be the likes of Exeter or La Rochelle and be able to afford monsters who are thletic and refs seem to allow to gt away with a lot.

Last night we got very little reward from a dominant scrum (Lambert played very well) and when we lost Crosbie we looked short of pace, Boyle would have been better to replace him, a sense that Cockers again was scared to throw in a youngster.

Shiel makes some poor deciions at times but he is not going to get better sitting in the stand,, so just let him play. If he is having a shocker then Henry can come on and steady the ship, but no need for that right now anyway.

I'd say Cockerill still has some credit ( and a name ) but very much like Toonie after the RWC imported Dalziel and Tandy, he badly needs some fresh thinking, particularly for the backs. If he ever listens to anyone of course . . .

I'm a bit disappointed Miller (who did play well) was on ahead of Boyle. He's off next year and you had Darge who was behind even Boyle here having a good game.

Agree about Shiel - thought he had a bit of a mare yesterday but slow and kind of steady Pyrgos just achieved nothing. Price and Horne jnr have excelled for Glasgow the last two weeks and shown Pyrgos to be yesterday's man.

I've not been shy in decrying the 1990's style, stuff it up the jumper rugby we've been playing, the game has moved on from that, unless you have a monster pack that executes 99% of the time in the opposition red zone, like Exeter, most defences will snuff it out.

That comment was made in reply to a factually incorrect post during the game.

SCOTLAND STARS RETURN FOR BT MURRAYFIELD FAREWELL
4 JUNE 2021
NEWS
Edinburgh Rugby welcome the return of four Scotland stars to start tomorrow’s Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup encounter against Ulster, the capital club’s last match as a permanent resident at BT Murrayfield Stadium (5 June, kick-off 5.15pm) – live on Premier Sports.

Back-row duo Jamie Ritchie and Hamish Watson, lock Ben Toolis and wing Duhan van der Merwe are all fit to play in the BT Murrayfield farewell, before the club takes residence in its brand new 7,800-seater stadium in time for the new season.

Ritchie will captain the side just four days after being named national team skipper for the forthcoming Summer Tour, while Watson will make his first appearance since being named in the 2021 British & Irish Lions squad.

Wing van der Merwe is back from a short spell on the side-lines and takes his place in the back-three, while Toolis returns from a five-month absence to partner 21-year-old Marshall Sykes in the boiler house.

The returning four are among 10 changes to the starting side which lost to Glasgow last month, with three of the club’s teenage FOSROC Academy prospects handed opportunities from the outset – debutant and full-back Harry Paterson (19), hooker Patrick Harrison (18) and number 8 Ben Muncaster (19).

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach, Richard Cockerill, said: “We’re pleased to welcome the return of some quality, experienced players alongside some exciting young talent for our final match at BT Murrayfield.

“It’s been no secret we’ve missed a number of players throughout this campaign so to see them back is a real boost for this weekend, and also as we look ahead to a full pre-season in preparation for life in our new home.

“Their experience will be invaluable to the young players who have developed alongside them in training this season and now get either another or a first chance to put a performance out there in an Edinburgh shirt and show us what they’re about.

“Ulster are a quality and consistent opponent. They’ve shown that throughout this season’s Guinness PRO14 competitions so we’re under no illusions how hard we’re going to have to work, and well we’re going to have to play, if we’re to come away with the result.”

Paterson’s selection at 15 allows Blair Kinghorn to partner scrum-half Charlie Shiel at half-back who, alongside centre George Taylor, completes the personnel changes to the back division – with Eroni Sau switching wings to accommodate van der Merwe and James Johnstone returning to operate at outside centre.

Young hooker Harrison will combine with props WP Nel (tighthead) and Boan Venter (loosehead) in the front-row, the latter switching places with Pierre Schoeman to complete the starting changes to the pack.

Other notable inclusions feature on the bench where FOSROC Super6 pair Cammy Hutchison (centre, Heriot’s Rugby) and Harri Morris (back-row, Southern Knights) are primed to make their debut from the bench.

Edinburgh Rugby team to play Ulster at BT Murrayfield Stadium
Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup (Saturday 5 June, kick-off 5.15pm)

15. Harry Paterson (0)

14. Eroni Sau (25)
13. James Johnstone (64)
12. George Taylor (36)
11. Duhan van der Merwe (66)

10. Blair Kinghorn (100)
9. Charlie Shiel (35)

1. Boan Venter (6)
2. Patrick Harrison (2)
3. WP Nel (155)
4. Marshall Sykes (6)
5. Ben Toolis (126)
6. Jamie Ritchie CAPTAIN (75)
7. Hamish Watson (119)
8. Ben Muncaster (1)

Substitutes:

16. Mike Willemse (38)
17. Pierre Schoeman (63)
18. Simon Berghan (89)
19. Mesu Kunavula (11)
20. Harri Morris (0)
21. Henry Pyrgos (51)
22. Nathan Chamberlain (9)
23. Cammy Hutchison (0)

Interesting... Hope VdM and Watson don't get injured. The injury list in the backrow is essentially everyone is injured so I guess Mish has to play.

Imagine if all this time Kinghorn's best position was 10! Good on Hutchison too.

Unavailable (23): Connor Boyle, Magnus Bradbury, David Cherry, Luke Crosbie, Matt Currie, Andrew Davidson, Andries Ferreira, Dan Gamble, Darcy Graham, Grant Gilchrist, Jamie Hodgson, Damien Hoyland, Nick Haining, Viliame Mata, Ally Miller, Stuart McInally, Dan Nutton, Freddie Owsley, Charlie Savala, Rory Sutherland, Jaco van der Walt, Jordan Venter, Angus Williams.

Perhaps through necessity that they are getting game time but really hope the young lads take their chances.

Good that Harrison has Nel and Venter alongside in the scrum and Toolis back to aim for in the lineout.

Similarly Muncaster getting a runout with Watson and Ritchie in the backrow, will be interesting to see how he goes again.

Good match for Kinghorn to be at 10, nothing at stake for ER so he can just play and if Shiel can keep the tempo up can see Kinghorn asking questions of the defence...although have visions of a few high risk plays perhaps not coming off as well.

Zero expectations for this match but would like to see a decent performance.

I like the team, a good mix and hopefully they will gel. Ulster will be forced to mix and match too, so should be a relatively even game.

On the Lions playing, I think it will do them good, if not then they will travel without a game for weeks or even months and potentially be caught old compared to the battle hardened English players in particular and damage thier test chances

Always an injury risk by playing, but no point worrying about that, they could pull a hammy getting on the plane!

Not sure what the point is in playing BK at 10 here. Is he being considered as cover for next year? Otherwise it is just depriving Chamberlain of another start.

Bennett not good enough to even make the bench?
