Edinburgh Rugby Squad 2021-22

Postby gowrie on Wed Jul 21, 2021 1:32 pm

New coach, new season, new squad, though since the academy has been announced and pre-season's starting it would be a good time for the new thread

LHP: Pierre Schoeman, Boan Venter, Sam Grahamslaw // (Michael Jones, Cole Lamberton)
H: Stuart McInally, Dave Cherry, Adam McBurney // (Patrick Harrison)
THP: Luan de Bruin, WP Nel, Lee-Roy Atalifo // (Dan Gamble)
Lock: Ben Toolis, Grant Gilchrist, Jamie Hodgson, Glen Young, Marshall Sykes, Pierce Phillips // (Jamie Campbell)
Flankers: Hamish Watson, Jamie Ritchie, Luke Crosbie, Mesu Kunavula, Magnus Bradbury, Connor Boyle// (Harri Morris, Rudi Brown)
8: Bill Mata, Nick Haining, Ben Muncaster
SH: Henry Pyrgos, Charlie Shiel, Ben Vellacott (Roan Frostwick)
FH: Jaco VdW, Nathan Chamberlain, Charlie Savala (Cameron Scott, Matt Russell)
C: James Lang, Mark Bennett, Chris Dean, George Taylor, James Johnstone, Cammy Hutchison, Jordan Venter // (Matt Currie)
Wing: Henry Immelman, Darcy Graham, Emiliano Boffelli, Ramiro Moyano, Jack Blain, Freddie Owsley // (Jacob Henry, Natan Sweeney, Ben Evans)
FB: Blair Kinghorn, Damien Hoyland // (Harry Paterson)

We do look quite light on props, hopefully a few opportunities for Gamble and Lamberton this season

I think we potentially look light in the front row and back 3. Owsley especially is still just a punt at this stage.

But both are position groups we seem to/can pick players up during the season for as and when required.

43 + Academy is that about normal squad size?

Guess with props we are not going to losing 3 or 4 to Scotland just potentially Nel and Schoeman and with less international overlap in new league structure could perhaps get away with less subject to injuries. Or a new coach brings McCallum back.

Dan Gamble's now joined the senior squad, hasn't he? He was in the same situation as Muncaster and Chamberlain - signed with one year in the academy moving onto a pro contract in the second.

Any news on Charlie Jupp or Shaun Gunn?

In the academy announcement, Gamble's listed as an academy player. Gunn and Jupp aren't there, so must have been let go

Academy leavers were announced as Shaun Gunn, Charlie Jupp, Scott King and Jack Mann.

Charlie Jupp and Jack Mann were both announced in Heriot S6 squads today. Dan Gamble and Cammy Hutchinson are also in Heriots squad as academy and partnership contracts respectively.

Would expect Gunn and King to perhaps appear in other S6 teams unless they leave rugby.

Ah, I see, cheers :)

I reckon Gunn will turn out for the Southern Knights again.

Good signings, no longer lacking in back 3 cover!

Maybe puts a bit of pressure on Kinghorns place for the first time in while with Immelman as well, perhaps give him a nudge to progress.

Carmichael announced as assistant coach at Southern knights

Boffelli, in particular, is a brilliant signing.

Very happy with this piece of business.

Very good signings.

Looking at the props I guess we will probably lose Schoey to international duty and associated rest protocols, and it is expecting a lot to think WP can play a big part in the coming season, in terms of numbers of games at least.

If we can get hold of a couple more it would make the squad look more complete.

However, focussing on the good news, these are good players coming in.
