2018 Summer Tour

Postby The Feral Goat on Tue May 08, 2018 10:44 am

Head Coach Gregor Townsend today named six uncapped players in a 33-man Scotland squad for the 2018 Summer Tour to Canada, USA and Argentina next month.

The potential debutants are split between the touring forwards and backs, with Edinburgh Rugby duo Lewis Carmichael and Jamie Ritchie joined by Glasgow Warriors back-row Matt Fagerson in the pack.

Glasgow Warriors half-backs George Horne and Adam Hastings earn the opportunity to continue a stellar debut season on the tour, alongside former Scotland U18 and Harlequins midfielder, James Lang, who also gets the call.

Scotland Head Coach, Gregor Townsend, said: “There are twin goals for this tour - the first is to build on the work we’ve done so far this season and finish with improved performances. We also have the Rugby World Cup in our thoughts, as this will be our last tour before we leave for Japan next year.

“Touring and staying together for four weeks and experiencing different environments will be very informative - seeing how players get on with each other, how much they improve and how they rise to each challenge we face on tour.”

The squad, which has an average age of 25 and just two players aged 30 or above, also features notable absentees with Townsend giving a number of squad regulars an extended break, one year out from Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan.

With John Barclay rested, Townsend has handed the tour captaincy to hooker Stuart McInally for the first time, a just reward for consistently-impressive performances for club and country.

Think Dean is perhaps a little unlucky has had a good season. Lang listed as a 10/12 but only played 12 for Quins from what I can see.

Only 2 out and out wingers, L jones and McGuigan?

Bit worrying to see Nel on the injury list again.

Congrats to Rambo on the captaincy

EDIT: Bennett missing as well while not in the greatest of form it is the sort of tour that may allow him to build some confidence. think he has in the 6N squad although unused.

Well Dean isn't going to be called up by Wales or England so he's at a disadvantage. I think Dean should be called up though, does everything well.

Really pleased to see Carmichael in there.

When you look at it by positions (between brackets, other possible and decent choices) :

1- Dell, Bhatti; (Reid - Marfo)
2- McInally, Brown, Turner; (Ford)
3- Berghan, Fagerson, MCallum;
4/5- Toolis, Swinson, R.Gray, Gilchrist, Carmichael; (J.Gray)
6/7- Bradbury, Ritchie, Hamilton; (Barclay)
8- Denton, Fagerson; (Wilson)
9- Horne, Price, Hidalgo-Clyne; (Laidlaw)
10- Horne, Hastings, Lang; (Russell)
12/13- Taylor, Dunbar, Grigg, Harris; (Jones)
11/14- Jones, McGuigan, Kinghorn; (Seymour, Maitland)
15- Hogg, Jackson;

The fact that Crosbie is listed as injured speaks volume IMO of how hightly he is rated.
And Matt Scott will come back absolutly hungry and desperated to make his way back in the scotland set-up.

Not many obvious candidates missing there.Perhaps an honourable mention for Bennett at 12/13 though? ( and Fife and Dean not too far away as well.)

Fife is a great shout actually. He's been better than Lee Jones! Really harsh ommission.

Bennett hasn't been worthy of a call up this season.

Dean's ahead of Bennett on this season I would say, and you're right about Fife.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

That looks somewhat experimental. However Canada have been struggling recently and the pack should still be pretty strong. Hope the backs can click.

Can't wait to see Ritchie play for Scotland, gwan laddie.

I took out my second paragraph as it was more or less exactly what Biffer wrote already, I only saw it when I tried to post

I notice Hamilton is down as unattached. I wonder if he genuinely is, in which case Glasgow should be in there pronto, or if there is just a deal not yet finalised.

Good to see a number of Edinburgh players recognised for improving this season.

That backline won't scare many teams, but against Canada our pack should win the game by themselves with a bit of magic from Kinghorn to get us a comfortable score.
