Reportedly one forward and one back position left open for players still involved for clubs assume maybe Richie Gray and possibly Weir (?) or maybe an unknown plucked out the air (or someone I have completely forgotten about).

Kyle Steyn?

Weir doesn't fit with what Townsend does, 3 flyhalfs in a world cup squad is a bit rich.

Good squad, fair play to Townsend wanting a small squad of those who definitely can make it rather than fillers like Dean and Harley. I do hope Ritchie makes it, I think he's the best lock going.

4 warm up games is a lot though for a small squad.

I dont understand the logic of not just naming the extra players? Could always just say they will miss a couple of sessions as still with clubs. If Ritchie Gray cant get in the quad there really is no-one else who woudl be better, so why not just put his name in?

The centres are an issue, particularly as Jones only really plays 13 and Johnson only relaly 12. Means there is less flexibility. Taylor if he is fit will go I think. Hard to leave out Horne as he adds a lot but not sure we need him if Hastings is going.

All the ins and outs from Scotland's training squad for RWC 2019 plus more stats than you can shake a spreadsheet at.

Oh and double Depth Chart goodness including the players who didn't make the cut but might still be involved...

Match preview for France v Scotland:

https://www.scottishrugbyblog.co.uk/2019/08/france-v-scotland-summer-tests-2019-match-preview/

- France's poor RWC cycle;
- another reason to dislike Yoann Huget;
- a dry run with some of the RWC officials.

Absolutely shocking performance. Another Townsend away from home disasterclass. No structure, no intensity, no basics, no nothing. Rubbish.

I’d love to blame the pitch, but, it wasn’t the cause.

Downward trend continues and I genuinely can't see it changing until there's a massive change of the coaching staff. The team is clearly worse than 2017, despite the players individually probably being better.

Group stage exit is the most likely result IMO

Not a good start to the RWC prep, few things really stand out

1. A number of Saturdays squad are fighting to get on the plane, Ritchie looked about the only one that knew that/cared. I expect more fight/desire across the team be it a warm up, friendly, 6N or RWC QF they have to deliver more.
2. In the build up a lot the players mentioned the work that had been put in on the defence and kicking game yet they were about the two poorest aspects which is a real concern a few weeks out from the start of the RWC.
3. Plan B still does not exist, not a hint of changing things.
4. Richie Gray should be in the squad
5. We need Finn Russell to be cloned

Agree with the comments on the quality of our players it is the best, most talented group I remember for a very long time the coaches have to get them performing and functioning as a team.

Yes, sadly the resilience that Big Vern was instilling in Scotland has now dissipated to nothing and Townsend's Scotland resemble his Glasgow teams - capabable of scintillating rugby but ultimately powder-puff when the heat is really on.
