Team due out this morning.

I think we will see a pretty strong team with hopefully a debut for Bennett and maybe a return for Marfo?

Hadn’t heard if Marco was near fitness, but Sutherland is close to a return apparently. No rerequirement to rest people really although a bit of rotation before the Stade double header will be likely, so I’d guess something like

Sutherland
McInally
McCallum
MacKenzie
Toolis
Ritchie
CdP
Watson
Kennedy
Van der Walt
Van der Merwe
Dean
Bennett
Fife
Kinghorn
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Scotland international centre Mark Bennett will make his eagerly anticipated debut against Southern Kings at Myreside tomorrow night (Friday 5 January, kick-off 7.35pm).

Head coach Richard Cockerill has made five changes to the side that faced Glasgow Warriors in last weekend’s 1872 Cup fixture at Scotstoun.

Dougie Fife is the only alteration to an otherwise unchanged back-three. The winger – who touched down against Southern Kings in last month’s fixture in Port Elizabeth – joins Duhan van der Merwe on the wing, whilst Blair Kinghorn keeps his place at full back.

In the midfield, 20-times capped Scotland international centre Mark Bennett makes his first appearance for the club since joining in the summer, having fully recovered from a knee injury suffered in last year’s Six Nations. The 24-year-old is joined in the centre by the experienced Phil Burleigh.

In the front row, prop Jordan Lay gets the nod at loosehead and packs down alongside Murray McCallum and hooker Stuart McInally, who once again captains the side.

The dynamic pairing of Ben Toolis and Grant Gilchrist form the second row, whilst Magnus Bradbury returns to the starting XV to link up with Hamish Watson and Cornell du Preez in the back row.

On his selection, Cockerill said: “Mark has worked incredibly hard to return from injury, so we’re delighted that he’s able to make his first start for the club in front of our supporters at Myreside.

“Southern Kings are a dangerous side in attack, and they will be well-rested having had a few week’s break over the festive period. It'll be a tough game, but we're looking forward to getting back to Myreside and putting in a good performance, and one that keeps us looking up the table."

Given the length of time he has been out, I don't think we should be expecting too much of Bennett for a while. I hope he is eased back in gently till he is up to speed.

Hopefully Kennedy gets a decent run.

I'm surprised he's not starting on the bench, tbh, but fingers crossed for the knee.

It's potentially a very good backline, we should be looking for a full points haul here if we want to keep in touch with Ulster.

There are also Scotland squad places to play for, so apart from wanting to do well for the club there is the added incentive there.

You start him on the bench. He gets crocked. Youre down a player. Correct to start even if he only plays a half

Agree, I think I recall similar when Nel first returned and one of the coaches was quoted as saying you are better to start them and see how long you get rather than bring them on and hope they make it to the end.

Strong team, and front row depth aside, a fair bit of quality on the bench as well.

Great to see Bennett in there. Back line has a bit of bite about it, seems to be developing well.

That pack has a lot of carrying in it. Looking forward to this.

Still a lot of injuries in the front-row... We have recruited not less than four props in the course of the season !

Hidalgo-Clyne, Ritchie and Johnstone rested.

Game time should help Hawick against Nails and also hopefully impress Embra's coaches for more game time

should be in the Edin squad today rather than last week, very strange to me that he isn't.

Potentially wanting to get more time at 15 under his belt so he can be the Kinghorn replacement when Kinghorn is rested?
