Edinburgh Home Attendances

Postby Wottie on Thu Jun 07, 2018 1:22 pm

As Cockerill appears to have got us off the bottom of the Bradley and Solomons induced trough and we have a season in the national stadium to savour the move to our new home on the back pitches at Murrayfield next season, thought we should log this season’s attendance stats so we can hopefully observe the progressive future growth of our fan base.

SEASON 2017/18
Average crowd at Myreside (6 games) - 3,569
Average crowd at BT Murrayfield exc. 1872 (7 games) - 4,399
Average crowd at 1872 (2 games) - 24,593

Biggest crowd (1872 Silver Saturday) - 25,353
Biggest non 1872 crowd (Cardiff CC QF) - 7,065
Smallest crowd (Krasney Yar) - 2,773

Total attendances for the season (15 games) - 101,395
Average attendance for season - 6,760
% of total attendance for season from 1872 games - 48.5%
Average attendance for season stripping out the 1872 games - 4,016
Note: for a like for like single 1872 home game season, the total attendance would have been 76,042 which is down on the previous season but the corresponding average attendance would be 5,432 which is up 5% on last season due to there being one fewer game than last season.

Nice one and higher than I'd expected!

Is this assuming that all ST holders attended every game?

Regardless, good to lay down a marker to see how we're progressing.

do you have the highest attendance outwith 1872?

I thought we may have picked up a few more fans towards end of season. I would like to think we will average between 5-6k outwith 1872 this coming season, suspect Champions Cup will be a draw, although given the capacity at Murrayfield attendance to remain selective for many rather than a jump in ST sales.

What was the maximum capacity at Myreside?

Champions Cup may draw in a few more fans, depending upon the opposition eg Newcastle travelling support and Ulster normally bring in a few.

I don't think we ever troubled it but about 5000-5500 rings a bell

Not 100% sure but I think the normal assumption is to treat a ST as a ticket sale for all games whether the holder attends or not. The significance of the 1872 games are plain for all to see from this. The Weeg sold out 100 % of their games at 7,351 per game save for the Scarlets game where the capacity was increased to 10,000 so averaged 7,540 over the season with not a single seat left unsold it would appear.

Our Ist two games there (Timisoara and Munster) were sell outs at 5,235. They had a reduced capacity for those games to er on the side of caution and not drop the ball and upset the residents. I think the capacity would have been 6,000 fully loaded as there were plenty seats in the end stands. We were playing poor stuff at the time and the boredom factor killed the novelty and we had 3,700 in for the Blues and 4,800 for Ospreys (Saturday game) before the crowd sank to 3,200 for the last two games of the season against Connacht and Dragons.

Biggest Myreside crowd this season was 3,930 for Leinster.

7,065 for the Pro14 play off against the Blues at BTM was the highest non-1872 attendance this season. Highest regular season Pro14 crowd was 4,989 for the Ulster debacle.

Really jamesmatthew numbers when you consider the team served up 15 wins this season and played some really entertaining stuff. 1st half of the season at Myreside we were 3,300 to 3,800. By end of season back at BT Murrayfield it was up to the order of 3,800 to 4,500 by way of tone with the Ulster match and Playoff game at c. 5k and 7k.

You know what the Edinburgh public's mentality is though. They like their well established ideas and don't like change. So there are a lot of people who are comfortable with the 'Edinburgh are SteveWalsh' idea as something to ring true that they can then be cynical and slightly sneering at. It'll take several years of winning rugby before the standard response to talking about the team with someone who doesn't come isn't along the lines of 'aren't Edinburgh rubbish though?'
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

I know a lot of people who have got out of the habit of going to watch Edinburgh play. Once the habit is broken and other things fill that time it is quite hard to get back into it.

Then there are the many false dawns. There are plenty of people who have seen several editions of 'Edinburgh improve for a while, then fall back again'. I'd not blame anyone for waiting to see how things pan out before committing.

Then there is a lack of 'buzz'. Maybe it's me, but for all Edinburgh have kicked on, I'm not sure they have had the credit they deserve. And when Edinburgh have come up against the stern challenges at the end of the season, they have fallen short, so again people may think 'same old flatter to deceive'.

In short, there is such deep rooted apathy (can apathy be deep rooted?) towards Edinburgh that we are past the point where one decent season will change things, so I agree it'll take a few consistent seasons to change hearts and minds.

I don't believe this MariusMitrea for a second. The fact is we've not had any success whatsoever over a 20 year period. It's not that complicated. We just pipped Ulster who consider themselves to have been in crisis this year. For us a season like theirs would be a success. People aren't as cynical as you think.

I'm very confident that people in Edinburgh are both very cynical and resistant to change.

I'd hope the free u16 ticket is a draw as it makes it better deal if you can't make every game

I haven’t checked the Welsh teams, but I did so before regarding the Irish sides, the attendances reflect the on field success, it’s certainly the case with Glasgow, too.

When Edinburgh start being serious contenders at the business end of the season, or get through to big cup quarters, the attendances will take care of themselves
