@disco - thanks for the analysis.

Minor point, would regard Fife as a Wing and therefore a replacement for Harries. Rather it’s Bryce for whom there’s no direct replacement.

Fair point. It'll be interesting to see how Cockerill covers full back this season if he loses young Blair for both Test windows and has to give him the Scotland rest protocols - ie maximum of 5 games in a row. Van Der Walt should be an option but it would mean him flitting between 15 and 10 on a semi-regular basis. Not a major issue but maybe hampers his chances of pushing Hickey for the starting berth at stand off.

Let's not forget Graham.
Don't mention Rory Hutton. I did once but I think I got away with it.

Sam Beard made his debut for the Crusaders last month, hopefully they both have success back in NZ. Both underrated.

What?! Sam Beard playing for the greatest club team on the planet? That's a surprise. He was underrated but still not a great player.

Would like Burleigh to end on his feet - great player for us.

Think he played against the French Barbarians rather than in a Super Rugby match.

I wouldn't mind seeing James Johnstone at FB. He will struggle for game time in the centre but would be a real weapon hitting the line and finding gaps. Sound defensively, no idea what like under high ball.

Burleigh very good for us, top guy off the park as well. Unfortunately for him he is not the big 12 a lot of French and English teams prefer at present. Hope he gets a good club back in NZ.

Defence is much different at 13 and 15, as are the lines you run and then positioning and kicking is so important tactically as well as you mention catching high balls.

He's 28 too so quite old to learn a new position , doesn't make much sense.

Agreed, I think we will see Kinghorn, Fife, Graham and VDW covering our full back slot this season. Looks more than decent. Kinghorn will no doubt be rotated a lot more then in past seasons now he is a genuine contender as a starter for the national side.

Agree. I think he’s most likely to backup Kinghorn.

Tom Brown is still around isn't he? Another back up option at 15. I thought Fife looked great as a back up 15 last year too. I think only Graham can offer the explosiveness of Kinghorn but he needs to prove he can play pro rugby. It's an open battle that spot.

Article on Duncy,

Such a shame that he had so many injury issues, he should have been a big part of Cockers plans. I genuinely think he is a better player then VDW, but form and fitness were the issue.

Hope he kicks on again and gets back into the international setup, he has the talent and we are still short there.

There's a puff piece interview with Cockers in the Hootsmun, the interesting bit is Barclay saying he hopes to be playing by December!

That would be astonishing, but brilliant if it turns out that way. I think he has as much to offer Edinburgh as a mentor and "coach" as he does as a player, and it's by watching him up close in a live game situation that our young players will see what can be done and start to emulate it.

Is this the best squad we've seen?

Not that it matters much now that Pyrgos is here but saw that Pulu (who we were reported to have courted) is leaving the Blues to play in Japan.
