Postby Tichtheid on Tue Mar 24, 2020 1:12 pm

As we have a lot of down time, a wee game to keep us going.

What is your best Edinburgh team? I've done this very quickly, so I will have missed a good few, but here is my first serve -

David Sole
Rambo
Iain Milne
Scott Murray
Nathan Hines
Todd Blackadder
Ally Hogg
Simon Taylor

Mike Blair
Mossy
Tim Visser
Scott Hastings
David Johnston
Darcy Graham
Andy Irvine

You expect me to be able to pick between Ross Rennie and Hamish Watson?

Nobody said it was going to be easy :D

Jamie Ritchie will be a future contender, I'm sure.

Kenny Milne? Gavin Hastings? Yes,agree with Tochtheid, bench "only" for them.
As an aside watching that tremendous rerun on Saturday of the 2003 Toulouse game had to laugh at the idea that Mossie Paterson "wasn't" a fly half.He looked pretty good to me!

That is an easy one! Rennie every day, the best player I have seen in an Edinburgh jersey in the pro era!

Wonderful player though Sole was it’s got to be Chunk at loosehead for me every time!

I see I jumped the gun, Embra are asking for an all time team on the official site.

This is becoming more difficult the more I think on it, Fin Calder, Lions captain, Martin Leslie (did John play for Edinburgh?) Sean Lineen, wee Greeg has a mountain of caps, as does Fordy, Ben Cains is like Rennie, a potentially brilliant career cut short by injury...

that was Hadden's "idea" wasn't it?

Watching that game back he had very good break but a lot of the game he looked a bit rabbit in headlights, like a player not used to playing there. Still be my pick there for an all time team, there's isn't a lot of competition apart from WCP on a very good day :D

Duncan Hodge?

Did Dougie Wylie no play for Edinburgh? I can't really remember.

There's not been many chances to mention him recently, but this is too good an opportunity to miss. Rory Hutton, anyone?

You're forgetting Tom Smith surely! Different league to Chunk and better than my boyhood hero Sole!

I'll get my team up I promise instead of just picking holes in yours!

Just checked, Smith never played for Edinburgh, just thought he must have due to having been a Sonian.

Only from last 10 years or so, since I'm not old enough to remember Tom Smith etc...

Kinghorn
Graham
Dean
Scott
Visser
van der Walt
SHC

Sutherland
McInally
Nel
Toolis
Gilchrist
Rennie
Watson
Denton

Considered putting Watson at 8 to let me pick Roddy Grant as well.
Struggled at 10 and 13. Must be forgetting some players - Laidlaw was probably closer to being at 10 than he was at 9.

Of the players I've seen for Edinburgh

Chunk
Ford
Nel
Hines
Gilchrist
Ritchie
Watson
Taylor

Blair
Laidlaw (Slightly cheating but we've never really had a really great 10. It's probably between him and Godman, but Edinburgh's best European season came with Laidlaw at 10.)

Visser
Scott
Cairns
Duhan

Mossy

OK - Im picking from 2000 when the pro era really got going.

Dickinson
Ford
Smith (pre injury)
Hines
Hamilton
Blackadder
Taylor
Rennie

Blair
Patterson
VdM
Philp
Scott
Webster
Darcy Graham

Bench: Chunk, McInally, Nel, Murray, Watson, Laidlaw, Cairns, Visser

A few changes of position to make sure we get our best backs on the pitch.
