Squad 22/23

Postby dolf_lundgren on Thu May 26, 2022 9:36 am

Not seen a thread so thought I would start one. Someone cleverer than me should really do a tracker of ins and outs!

ER have just tweeted a photo of Maverick & Goose from Top Gun saying there is signing news today.

Maverick and Goose were a lethal attacking force who worked really well together and lived life to the full.

We already have Bennet, so the only explanation is that Finn Russell is joining us as backup 10 for next season, cant think of any other plausible explanation.

That or Johnny Gray to go alongside Skinner, although he would be fighting for a bench spot with Glenn Young and Marshall Sykes.

Some geese are referred to as ganders*, and 'gander' rhymes with 'Zander'.

The GIF posted is presumably inferring that the elder Fagerson is joining the club. An ideal long-term replacement for WP Nel - well done ER, a great bit of business!

*ignore the fact ganders are female.

Think we have the following 45 confirmed (46 if Van Kiekirk contracted).

Bit light at centre maybe

LHP: Pierre Schoeman, Boan Venter, Nick Auterac, Harrisson Courtney

H: Stuart McInally, Dave Cherry, Adam McBurney, Patrick Harrison

THP: Luan de Bruin, WP Nel, Lee-Roy Atalifo, Angus Williams

Lock: Sam Skinner, Grant Gilchrist, Jamie Hodgson, Glen Young, Marshall Sykes, Pierce Phillips

Flankers: Hamish Watson, Jamie Ritchie, Luke Crosbie, Mesu Kunavula, Connor Boyle (Kwagga Van Niekirk on squad page?)

8: Bill Mata, Nick Haining, Ben Muncaster

SH: Henry Pyrgos, Charlie Shiel, Ben Vellacott

FH: Blair Kinghorn, Jaco VdW, Charlie Savala

C: James Lang, Mark Bennett, Chris Dean, Cammy Hutchison, Matt Currie.

Back 3: Henry Immelman, Darcy Graham, Emiliano Boffelli, Damien Hoyland, Jack Blain, Freddie Owsley, Wes Goosen

Less excitingly, McInally is a pilot?

Suspect it is a "wing"man ie taking Moyano's place. Love it to be VDM of course but more likely Kyle Rowe. But of course he's not a "new face" so could be anyone from Henry Arundell onwards..!

Decent signing, good replacement for Mayano and should suit our style. Interesting talking about ability to play 13 too.

Not relevant to the signings, but you'll find that ganders are male.

I'll not bang on about it being time that Edinburgh and Glasgow had women's teams

Overall this looks really strong. Feels like we have a year of very little change, we have lot of flexibility in the backs, but possibly a body or 2 light.

All will depend on how the Scotland squad want to prepare for RWC23, if they pull back main players before the end of the season, then we could see the likes of Schoe, Nel, Gilco, Ritchie Darcy etc not being available. Anothe second row may not go amiss either, given Glasgow have very few in contentiion for Scotland we are likely to lose at least 2 for every game, if not more for wider squads. Wouldnt be much of a stretch for Gilcho, Skinner, Sykes, Hodgson, and Young all to go on tour this summer. Will Gray and Cummings potentially injured, not sure of the form of Craig, H-H and Davidson?

Wes Goosen is a really exciting signing. An absolutely phenomenal player. Stylistically very similar to Graham and Hoyland. Hopefully we have Bofelli at 15 with two of those three on the wings and sprinkle in Henry or Patterson.

Good that we have replaced Moyano quickly. It was disappointing to see Moyano leave, he has been outstanding winger and try scorer for us and I hope he has something good lined up. I am not too well acquainted with Goosen but those that are tell me he is an excellent player and a good signing. Watching videos of him he looks like he will fit right in with our style of play.

Certainly is, he's done a great job for us. Putting a positive slant on it, he's been in that role for quite a while, and all coaches have a shelf life. Perhaps getting a new defensive coach in will freshen things up and keep the players on their toes. That has to be the hope, anyway.
