He has done well and it’s an interesting move replacing Gustard who has also done a good job.

I wonder if this opens the door for Cieran Beattie to come in, seems to have a good reputation working wi5h the 7s and other squads.

Nick Auterac signed. Not a surprise to see him come north and adds good depth to Schoeman and Venter.

Felt there was an inevitability about him coming north when it became apparent he was an experienced SQ loosie without a club. Setting aside the longer-term issues about the actual development of props in Scotland, this is a decent signing for the squad for next season.

Not a bad signing.Doubt he had too many options so in today's climate probably not all that expensive for our budget.
Look forward to him showing he can "be world class"! Good for him to aspire to this .

Decent signing, as mentioned will do a good job as backup. We really do need to start developing our own though, something where they could be loaned out for a couple of years to the champ/D2 would make a big difference.

Slightly concerning that the likes of Auterac and Dell dont seem to be able to get a contract offer though, there are only so many potential caps we can hoarde to make sure they are playing at a decent level.

I think the problem isn't they're Scottish qualified it's that Auterac was third choice for Northampton and Dell is fourth choice for London Irish. I don't think it's easy for that level of player to be getting contracts anywhere. If Wasps third/fourth choice LH struggled to get a contract not of us would know about it for example.

Good bit of added depth, schoeman and Venter are quality , was it Wasps that we saw Courtney really struggle and schoey brought on before HT not sure front row is a position where semi pro can easily step up without significant conditioning which is obviously difficult if not a full time pro.

Salary cap changes down South mean that some teams aren't able to prioritise carrying as much quality at third or fourth choice in their depth charts for some positions depending on their squad makeup.

Auterac is a very good player and also from a strength and conditioning perspective a bit of a monster which I think could be good for our academy props to aspire towards and see how he trains.

League rules might prevent it, but I do wonder if the SRU could do something to help subsiside some of these guys going south, paying even £25k towards their salary if they are going to be 2/3rd choice woudl be money well spent.

It woudl probably be impossible to manage and ensure they get game time, and without doing it for all players, but it would possibly be a better way ot managing resources. Auterac coming in does block off Courtney and any other young loose head who comes on the scene.

if you mean going to the premiership, doubt very much there is anything to stop them taking the money. But it would still count towards their salary cap and SQ players affect the average number of EQ need to have - or suffer a fine. Only the very best Scots are going to be signed from here on I think, others rarer and rarer

Courtney is 25, which is young-ish for a prop but he's clearly not going to be a top level player. There are no young looseheads currently in the Scottish age grade system of note. Mikey Jones, Tom Banatvala and Ali Rodgers don't look good at all in the u20 and are irregular super six players. This is the problem when you don't play guys like Grahamslaw who at the very least was capable at u20.

It absolutely makes sense to pay players salary going down to the championship but there's no chance the RFU would allow that.

Twitter rumours about the defence coach vacancy: Michael Todd, who is currently in that position with the Queensland Reds, is heading over.

Academy roster for 22-23 confirmed:

Edinburgh Rugby
Matt Russell (Heriot’s Rugby)**
Ben Evans (Heriot’s Rugby)**
Jamie Campbell (Heriot’s Rugby)**
Dan Gamble (Heriot’s Rugby)**
Nathan Sweeney (Heriot’s Rugby)**
Harry Paterson (Watsonians)**
Patrick Harrison (Watsonians)**
Robbie Deans (Watsonians)*
Liam McConnell (Boroughmuir Bears)*
Mike Jones (Boroughmuir Bears)**
Rudi Brown (Southern Knights)**
Harri Morris (Southern Knights)**
Cameron Scott (Southern Knights)**
Jacob Henry (Southern Knights)**
Finn Douglas (Southern Knights)*

** Retained FOSROC Scottish Rugby Contracted Academy Player from 2021/2022
*New FOSROC Scottish Rugby Contracted Academy Player

The only one we've really seen so far is Harrison, but it is really now make or break for quite a few of the guys who have been retained. It's good to see Jacob Henry in the 7s squad for the Commonwealth Games, but I hope he kicks on this season and features a few times in blue and orange.

There is a comment in the SRU article that "more than a third" of last year's academy have signed pro deals, but the numbers don't quite add up yet. I think 5 of Glasgow's academy last year have signed pro contracts, but only 1 of ours (Matt Currie). Roan Frostwick (along with Jack Blain!) is currently playing in Australia, but that may just be a development thing over the summer and he is going to sign a pro deal. With 12 players retained from last year, the only other player missing is Cole Lamberton.

Another prop slips through the net, it's a worrying trait.

Elsewhere the squad is shaping up nicely, as was said on the international thread Skinner looks like a good addition to a well-stocked boiler house squad, in fact the whole pack looks good if they can stay fit, though time will eventually call The Mighty WP Nel's playing days at an end, he's 36 now.

Goosen could be an absolute star at the end of the backline we have now, on that note, Immelman came onto a good game after a slowish start, Damo was playing really well and continued to do so against Chile, Boff is Boff and Darcy is Darcy.
van der Walt filled in really quite well at fullback, Blain still has plenty of time to fulfil his early promise and Owsley's pace will cause opposition wingers real problems

SteveWalsh, I've got the preseason optimism again.
