The New Season Is Upon Us
As the heat of summer slid gently over the Forth, ennui enveloped your correspondent like a haar settling sinuously over Leith. The torpor of the long hot days, disturbed only by the occasional whooshing noise of another executive exiting rapidly the revolving door that is the SRU these days, sank slowly into the bones and sinews of his being. Nothingness was all around him, as he dangled helplessly in the frozen time, waiting for he knew not what.
But then, tentatively at first, then with ever greater confidence and energy, a gentle buzz was heard about the city. Latvian mimes, Oirish comics and even respectable actors were spotted roaming free in the streets. The Boys in Blue renewed their acquaintance with certain ladies (?) of the Orient, Charlotte Square was swathed in canvas and the metropolitan media briefly discovered Life Beyond London. It could mean only one thing......
IT'S ALMOST TIME FOR THE NEW RUGBY SEASON!!!!!
As the rest of Edinburgh copes with the festival in the only way it knows how, by mumping endlessly about how you can't get on a bus for all the tourists with their backpacks, some of us are holding our breath, waiting for the fireworks to begin.....
(OK, I know the fireworks have technically already begun, thanks to the Tattoo, but isn't it nice of the Festival to arrange the Fireworks Concert to coincide with the first weekend of the Celtic League!)
As we approach the new season, it is time once again for members of the Edinburgh Rugby Supporters Club to stand up and be counted. Frank is on record as saying that this is probably the strongest squad we've ever had, and with players not being dragged off to pointless Scotland squad sessions all season he may even get to use most of the players. So now is the time for us to get behind the boys and give them our full support!!
Let's pause a moment to welcome back those returning to the team from last season and give a warm welcome to the new boys joining us for the first time, Matt Mustchin, Peter Jorgensen, Francisco Leonelli and Dave Hewett; and of course our own returning prodigal, Duncan Hodge. We look forward to meeting you all in the Supporters' Club Bar and getting to know you throughout the season.
When you look at the squad, you begin to see what Frank is talking about; it really does look like a powerful one with lots of competition throughout the team. It's a team you're going to want to be part of, and you can do so simply by printing and completing the application form and bringing it to the Supporters Club Info Point in the President's Suite on match day.
Even Season Ticket Holders, who are still entitled to FREE membership, will have to hand over a membership application form this year in order to get their membership. This is to enable us to build up an accurate and up-to-date record of all our members.
Also this year, we are offering our members a truly exciting new benefit ("What", you ask, "could be more truly exciting than the roller coaster ride of supporting our boys in black and red?!"). The opportunity to turn your obsession to financial gain, that's what.
Through the ERSC 200Club, 200 lucky supporters will have the chance each month to win prizes of £20, £30 and £50 - and as if that isn't enough one lucky supporter will win £1000 in the end of season Grand Prize Draw. But If You Wanna Win It, You've Gotta Be In It!
Remember only the first 200 applicants can be accepted, so don't delay, print and complete your application form today, and return it, with the £20 entry fee, to the Supporters Club Info Point in the President's Suite on match day before September 30th, when the first draw will be held - more on that later.
Meanwhile, we look forward to seeing you all at the friendly against Sale on the 19th, at our first home Celtic League match against Connacht on September 10th and throughout the season!
