If five points up with ten minutes to go, you have to kick three easy points when given the chance. Then you can think about the bonus point when the opposition are forced to chase the game and space opens up. When that penalty was given I watched Kinghorn animatedly telling Vellacott to go for the corner... whether that actually influenced the decision I don't know, but Gilchrist should have taken charge at that point.
Then with one of the late penalties to the corner, Healy actually pointed to the sticks, but the ref told him he couldn't because it had already been indicated we we kicking for touch! Unbelievable.
Ritchie made some great turnovers but completely blotted his copybook by giving away stupid late penalties and generally mouthing off to the ref all night. It's bad enough when he does that as captain for Scotland, but if you aren't even the skipper then it's a terrible course of action.
I feel bad criticising Goosen, who's had a good season thus far, but he appeared to have the proberbial dildos for hands last night.
Finally, I wish Kinghorn the very best with his move, but last night was him in microcosm... a couple of lovely tries, undermined by a dreadful mistake that ultimately lost us the game.
Sorry for an overwhelmingly negative and ranty post, but each aspect of it feels accurate.
