Caullie Lug 2022

Postby Impega on Fri May 13, 2022 11:43 am

Runners and riders this year?

There are some good options to choose from - my personal shortlist is: Cherry, Schoeman, Muncaster, Boyle and Moyano.

Cherry front runner for me

Schoeman close behind

Think Gilchrist and Bradbury have had their best seasons in a while, Bennett has been superb but ruled out for being a back.

Boffelli (or vellacott ) I think will get newcomer.

muncaster prob young player of the year.

Don't disagree with any of the above - gets my vote.

Dave Cherry is a good shout as he's fairly unappreciated across Scottish rugby but demonstrates what the Cauille Lug is about.

I didn't consider him as an option but I'm convinced.

Boffeli .. more game time than any other player and biggest challenge and impact on scoreboard. Cherry’s form a bit hot and cold at times but on “commitment to shirt “criteria he is up there with Gilchrist and Schoeman.

Boffelli is probably up there for player of the season but Caullie Lug for me is more about physical commitment.

We could just have an additional new award called the Dave Cherry.

It's just the Caullie Lug but only for bald players. Allows others to win the Caullie Lug before Cherry retires.

Do we have a list of previous winners?

I wouldnt nbe adverse to Maggie getting it if he hasnt had it before, he has been excellent this year, both with and without the ball.

Venter would have been an outside bet too given his exploits.

Think past winner list is

Chunk
Roddy grant 13/14
Ross ford 14/15
Anton bresler 15/16
Hamish watson 16/17
Neil cochrane 17/18
Darcy graham 18/19
Schoeman 19/20
Crosbie 20/21

Nothing against Darcy he certainly puts body on line but he is a back and i think 18/19 was when ER took on the award and removed fans free choice although note it is back now.

When checking back threads it is noticeable some of the players that were in conversation but never won, dickinson, WP, CDP among other great servants to ER
