Lions tour 2021

Postby Impega on Mon Apr 12, 2021 8:06 am

Sounds like Townsend and possibly Steve Tandy are going to be part of the Lions coaching staff. A good thing in terms of potential Scottish representation in the squad?

Watson is the only Edinburgh player I can ultimately see being selected; DVDM, Ritchie and Sutherland may be discussed but I can't see them making it.

Gatland will have his gameplan set in his head, and selection will be to match that gameplan. So being an assistant to him will be like being an assistant coach under Cockerill. It will make LawrenceBryce all difference

I am not so sure Townsend would have taken the job if that is the case. Although there may be an exception in this case as if he turns down the Lions again his head coaching chances for the Lions drop to very slim.

Amazing news! Three Edinburgh Lions.

Was nervous watching the announcement haha! What a feeling it must and all three really deserve it. VdM and Suzz career threatening injuries and Watson had to wait his time. Really good news.

Sutherland, Watson and Van Der Merwe all in the Lions team to face Japan at Murrayfield this weekend.

Very exciting day for the players, and it'll be good to see a crowd back at Murrayfield.

Great to see all three Edinburgh lads in the team for Murrayfield.
(Though technically am I right in saying that by the time of the first game in SA next Saturday VDM will be listed as a a Worcester player as contracts usually end on 30th June?)

Sutherland was neat and tidy on Saturday. Nothing fancy but scrummed well enough and hit plenty of rucks.

Duhan is still rough around the edges but defended well and took his attacking chances.

Well done Hamish watson! (actually all the Scots did pretty well).
Obviously haven't seen Tom Curry yet but Watson made a pretty big push for a Test spot .

Add to that Faletau, pre-tour nailed on for the * jersey, had another really quiet / anonymous game so Simmons and Curry very much in the frame for the base of the scrum if things don't change before the tests.
Bill Mata. The second coming?

Three Edinburgh players in the Test 23*. That's something to be proud of and to look forward to.

*We're entitled to count Duhan and Suzz as Edinburgh players I think!

I reckon it's more that they don't want Conan to do another full 80mins so they need Faletau. Watson back in for test 3.
