Really disappointing, last season wasn't great but I think the squad is in a decent position.

Bit of work to do to get a new head coach in if this was unplanned.

It may have been brewing for a while but its still awful timing. Last season was a zombie one, no one should be judged on it. Cockerill was great for the team and for promoting the club. He will be missed by me and many others. Theyve got their season ticket sales in now so thats locked in, but this is poor

Surprised but not shocked, the race is now on to get a new leader.

Surprised but not shocked sums it up for me.

Changes were needed and that's been obvious. It seems like Cockers didn't want to make changes.

A shame - until covid I was loving Cockerill's Edinburgh. Thanks for everything.

He is described as leaving "by mutual consent to pursue other opportunities".

To my mind, this means he is going to another job that he has lined up, had a contractual clause to invoke that allows him to do that, and this is a way of saving face for all parties. Except that we can work out what is happening.

I would expect Mike Blair to be given a chance at a head coach role, which will keep him nicely warmed up for the top job in a few years' time.

It does feel like that is the way the conversation may have gone.

I have been critical of RC's inability to evolve his coaching style but he is excellent at setting the a culture and setting a base of performance but modern rugby is constantly evolving and if RC isn't willing/able to do so he may find himself as a specialist in taking teams at rock bottom and establishing a culture then moving on to allow someone else to go to the next step.

Suspect we may see Blair get promoted from national assistant to club head coach as per Townsend and Wilson.

It does feel like he has had a big offer from somewhere else, similar wording to the Sutherland release.

Sad though, I really hoped he could get us back to pre covid levels, with a bit more attention on the back line. His talk was about staying long term and buillding and the stadium was very much part of that. Maybe he realised his coaching box was behind a pillar?

Unless this has been on the cards it does leave us very close to the new season, with a coach to come in to players wh they haven't chosen and a coaching team the same. Id be happy with Blair, but really would have been better to have given him the summer to prepare properly.

If not Blair, Im not sure who is available at this time of year.

Like Sutherland understandable but very disappointing, i hope this is not just a money saving exercise.

Have heard Peter Walton’s name cropping up a few times already.

Jamie Lyall tweeting murmurs players have been unhappy for some months.

no mention of Hodge in press release it is MacRae and Lumley that are leading pre-season

Difficult time to recruit not sure who is available or in budget but my preference would be Mike Blair i think at this stage.

No real surprise. I always felt that RC MO was to use Edinburgh as a means to an end to get back into what the media in particular consider mainstream rugby - GP or Top14. Maybe even Japan.
He has to be congratulated at the very least for making the team competitive and getting to playoffs.
It would appear to be a difficult time to find a replacement and the likelihood is that it will be a direct SRU appointment, but as there is no one with any head coach experience, Blair seems the obvious choice.

I noticed that about Hodge. I guess if Blair is the man for the job it would likely see Hodge the odd man out.

Yup - same here. Just think something hasn't been right for a while - the handling of Chamberlain has stood out for me. There's been no logic to it. Player power ? Cockers upset at Sutherland's departure ?

I wouldn't be surprised if he's back off to France - certainly there doesn't look like anything at Leicester.
Overall I think he definitely leaves in credit, but I also think he's not a 10 years in a job coach.

I guess Blair is in pole position - maybe this has been brewing and his cancelled stint at Scotland A was going to be the prelude. I do think Dalziel would do a good job. Given the timing, I can't see anything other than an SRU "internal" posting unless the stars have somehow aligned - Roddy Grant ?

Off to the Glasgow forum to post a rumour Danny Wilson has resigned . . . .

Blair probably in pole position as already on the SRU books and fresh from his unbeaten stint as Scotland acting head coach. MacRae probably in the mix as an internal promotion and seems to be highly rated.

Mallinder also a possibility if he wants to go back to a more hands on role.

If it does end up being Blair, the coaching setup looks a bit backs coach heavy.
